Well I'm still standing! I have to admit it was actually fun, sort of... The water was FREEZING... 59 degrees! Once I got over the inital shock and a frozen face I was able to do the swim. Nothing spectacular... I need to work on my siting as I tended to wander a bit! T1 went pretty well, though my feet were numb. Now enter the massive hills on the bike ride. Wow. I drove them yesterday in the car, but to ride them was another story. I took the uphills slowly in my lowest gear in some cases. It was really the downhills that scared me the most!! This runner felt a bit out of control and used the brakes. It cost me time. They started the novices first this year and a few minutes into the bike race the "elites" were screaming by us on their $10,000 bikes! My feet never really woke up. T2 went fast, but my legs were screaming at me. Took me about a mile to get a rhythm going, and at about mile 2, I was able to start kicking in some speed and even passed a bunch.

I am trying to get over that even though I'm 59 they group you with the 60 year olds! Ha... grew up fast!

All in all it was a neat experience with some definite challenges that would have been helped with more training. I am not sure I will ever get used to the downhills on a bike... I go the bike up to 30 MPH and really started to worry... the elites must have been doing 50 mph on the downhills!

the best way to overcome that speed issue is to keep doing it and acclimate yourself to it. pretty soon you'll be right there in the pack. your biking in training proves that.
