Note: GPS signal problems with some areas and definately with bridges... splits not all accurate.
I got home this afternoon at 5:00 and had a school board meeting at 7:00. Just finishing it now at 9:30!
The experience was amazing running NYC. I ran for the NYPD and we were given the full VIP treatment – NYPD bus with police escort to the start line – traffic was stopped so we could go through! The start over the Verrazano Bridge was breath taking… Brooklyn with the crowds and bands were awesome. My pace was to be 8:03 and I was on track pretty much to mile 9, then I just started losing a few seconds with each mile… there are a lot of “silent hills” along with the bridges that zap your pace and energy. By the time I got to mile 21 I realized I had no chance of making my 3:30 goal, let alone 3:40. Anytime I sped up the pace I started to get calf cramps. I actually had to stop 3 times just to stretch out… I was 400 YDS from the finish and I started to kick and was moving fine and instantly a calf cramp that stopped me in my tracks. Went to railing swearing and lady kept rubbing my back, saying you can do! Stretched and finished at 3:54. Hard to believe Boston was 3:33?!
Since taking the new job my mileage and opportunity to run has really taken a hit. I really just wasn’t in best form for the race. I went in with the attitude of just enjoying it, and I really did, just a bit bummed with my time. Honesty, I think the course is tougher than Boston! But it was a BLAST and I would like to do it again!
Anyway… I get a break now until after Xmas where we all gear it up again for Boston! Lots more stories to tell... ask me about seeing the giant video of Caroline at mile 21! What an inspiration to finish!
A great race that everyone should do!
