First run in two weeks! Took it very slow and steady. Was diagnosed on Thursday with a torn meniscus and arthritis. I asked the doctor what happened... he said you're old! Run started with some minor knee pain which actually got better after two miles. The calves were the real hurting units. I have biked some in the last two weeks, but the calves were still screaming. I imagine it is related to a very conservative stride length and high cadence. Anyway, how to do Boston in four weeks! This is reminiscent of my first marathon for Chicago. Namely taper for 14 weeks and then train for four! The doc showed me the meniscus tear on the MRI. A little flap hanging off the side of the knee that rubs on the bone and the ACL. Says I should have surgery to trim it off. He said it can wait. Wants to give me a cortisone injection in the knee on April 6th. Says you need to do that 2-3 weeks before the event as it will reduce the swelling and in turn the pain. So I guess I better not be drug tested for this race. Trying to stay psyched.

Damn, good luck with it. If you need some clean urine, let me know.

Man Dave, I'm sorry to read this. At least you know what it is I guess. And yes, the calf pain and soreness can totally be from the stride length/cadence thing. I still have it, especially on longer runs because my calves just aren't used to it. Good luck. I'm sure you will be able to run Boston, just hope you can enjoy it for the experience rather than a PR attempt.

Well, poop. You do have a proven track record of over-achieving in circumstances such as these, though, so there's that.
