Was pretty hot today being sunny with dew point around 18. Wanted to do a strength workout with the first rep at HM pace, 2nd at 10K pace and last rep at 5K pace so something like 4:02/3:56/3:48. In the past I have not had anything left for the final rep. Today I had nothing after the HM pace effort. I felt reasonably comfortable in the first 4800 and thought I was holding back a bit despite the pace being a little fast for my current fitness. After the rep I jogged to get some water before prepping for the next rep. But legs just didn't respond - both power and cadence were weak for what should be 10K pace. Breathing accelerated over the last km so I was definitely near my max. Same problem with the final rep although I was able to perform relatively better than I have in the past so maybe I did hold back a little in the 3200 just so I could finish the workout. Developed a cramp in my right side in both the last 2 reps which didn't help either. I think the heat was just a little too much and I drained my energy just about immediately after the first 4800.
