Pretty happy with the result of this given the snafu at the exchange zone. Glad Brian yelled at me to take it easy the first mile or this could have gone south pretty quickly!!! With that said, I got smoked by the team that won the race. Brian handed off to me in the lead (even after losing 90 seconds to the exchange zone BS). Tried to get out and ease into it. Before the mile, the second place team came by me hard. Given my pace, figured he had to be running like 5:30s. Turns out he probably averaged 5:26. At the half, he hadme by six seconds. By mile 20, that had grown to 2:57. YIKES!!!
Anyway, once he went around me, I knew he was gone unless he died a hard death. So, I just worked on passing as many people as possible before handing off to George. Not sure how many I passed -- maybe 6 or so including the lead woman. Happy with my mental focus to not lose my mind and really run a controlled effort. I think this points to good things. Also, it shows you the difference weather makes. Fairly certain that I could have held the 5:50 pace for another mile which would have given me a fairly decent 15k PR...
