The Swimsuit Classic 5k. Heard the weather report, 86 degrees at race start, which was 9am. Pretty nonsensically hot day.

I started off by surging directly into the lead, despite actively holding back a bit. I was just following the police car and trying to make sure I hit the first mile in 5:30. When I actually passed mile 1, I was only mildly disappointed this time, having run 5:26. Still too fast, but getting a bit better.

About 3 minutes later, a man caught me and ran next to me for a couple hundred yards, before saying something like "You're doing well" and running by. I tried to hang with him, but after a couple minutes of it he just dropped me. He looked back a few times but definitely lost me. However, when results were posted they had me as first place. What the fuck? Where did that man go?

The two mile marker was not in place, I have no idea what I crossed the second mile in. Taking my first mile split and subtracting it from the total time, I end up with an average pace of 5:47 for the last 2.1 miles. Again, it seems like I'm getting a bit better at holding to a pace, although this was probably another case of mile 2 at 5:40 and mile 3 at 6:00. Hot day though, perhaps if it were 15 degrees cooler I could have stayed on pace longer?
