Notes

This was the hardest thing I have ever done, but I loved it and would surely do it again. The experience of doing this with World Vision was awesome. For breakfast I had 2 slices of bread with peanut butter and a banana. I walked about 1.25 miles to the World Vision tent and got there at 6:00 with a 7:30 race start. It was about 67F at the start. It took me about 13 minutes to get to the start line from the front 1/3 of the open corral. The first few miles were great. I was signed up to run with the 4:15 pace group (9:43) miles, but I went out faster than them as ran the first 17 or so miles between 9:10 and 9:30 pace. Then the heat caught up with me. I started getting very sore in my calves and quads and my mid to upper back started to hurt quite a bit. I ate 1 pack of Sport Beans spread over the length of the race. I took water or gatorade at every stop this race, but I got really hot and had to walk starting at about 17 1/2 miles. Temperatures reached 86F and I saw bank sign that said 96F at about mile 21. By the end I was taking a gatorade and 3 cups of water at every water stop. I would dump 2 of the cups of water on me. From 17 1/2 to the end, I ran where I could and walked where I could, and my splits reflect that. From 17 1/2 on, my splits were as high as 13:00 miles until the end. All of that being said, I loved the race and the crowd support was incredible. People were yelling my name and cheering for me like their life depended on it. I believe that wearing the World Vision shirt helped me to get extra crowd support. By the end, most of the people finishing around me were walking. It was probably at least 3 walkers to every one runner. From talking to people, it seemed like the heat affected almost everyone. After the race, I was really sore. Sitting in a chair or on the ground was really, really difficult. I sat some and walked some for about the next 2 hours or so. I was hungry after the race and tried to eat a burger at the World Vision BBQ, but after one bite I was unable to eat it. I did eat a few chips and drank a lot of gatorade and water. The long walk (1.25 miles) back to the hotel after about 2 hours of hanging around the BBQ didn't feel too bad and I'm sure it did me good. I was sore the rest of the night, but not terribly so. We did walk up to Niketown and to dinner and I didn't feel too bad and managed to eat some too. I did not finish with the time I wanted (4:15) and initially I was dissappointed in this, but looking back, given the conditions I don't feel too bad about it. I definitely had fun and would love to race another marathon, even though this distance is significantly harder than a half marathon or anything I had done before.
