The revised route this morning was 17 miles, which was fine with me. I thought last week they said they were planning 18, but no biggie. Joe's dad, Tony, drove us out to Natick, and we ran home. Tony is so funny. We had Chad with us today. He ran Derry, but did not ride with us, so I got to know him a little better this morning.

He is running Boston for a charity, and it will be his first marathon. In fact, today was his longest long run ever. :) He has a two-and-a-half-year-old child and said he basically quit doing anything active about two and a half years ago. :) So he started running recently. He is naturally quick, though.

So Tony says, "Chad, I understand you're faster than some people in this car," which was kind of an understatement because he's actually faster than EVERYbody who was in the car.

Joe said, "Don't worry, Chad. He would have said something just as blunt if you had been the slowest person in the car."

Following last year's marathon, Joe's family went out to eat. Joe and Pauline wore their medals and struck up a conversation with the guests at the next table, also wearing their medals. When Tony found out the neighboring runner's finish time, he said, "Oh, that's an hour slower than my son!"

We all laughed. Joe said he wanted to crawl under the table. I'm sure the other runner took it well. It just didn't seem like the most sensitive thing to say.

Anyway, I had a great run. It was cold, of course (21 degrees with some wind), but the ground is bare. We may be getting some accumulating snow midweek (BOO!), so I'd rather have non-slip surfaces. It's easy to add layers. There's less you can do about snow and ice.

I forgot to mention that at the end of my run Friday morning, I saw a hawk near the John Jeffries House. It was right near where I saw one on Christmas Day a few years back, only on that occasion, the bird was actually perched on the handrail and I had to veer around him. It was a little nerve-wracking. This time, he was in a tree, so I could admire him from a more comfortable distance. :)

So I'll be taking a nap this afternoon and then going out with my friends tonight to the opera. One couple is not going to dinner, but the other couple will call me later. I think we're going to the Parish Cafe, so whenever I got tired during my run today, I just kept thinking, "Zuni Roll, Zuni Roll, Zuni Roll."

The Zuni Roll

Smoked turkey breast, crisp bacon, chopped scallions, dill havarti cheese, and cranberry-chipotle sauce wrapped in a flour tortilla and served warm with a side of homemade potato salad or cole slaw.

YUM!
