Notes

Tropicool 5k. Initially, after seeing the clock as I crossed the line, I was pretty bummed out. Then I started puking. Back at the office, I analyzed and re-analyzed my time, the results of my usual competitors plus I measured the course on this site's mapping function, and I am now more pleased than not. I mapped this at 3.2, but that is right angles on all curves, so it was likely 3.16 - 3.18, which results in a fairly respectable pace. I also thought I ran this well, I mini-tapered this past week, and I took yesterday off. During my warm up my legs felt great. Couple of deuces and toed the line after meeting up with Dermot. There were a bunch of HS track stars here so I knew I would be buried in the results. All the track stars and Dermot flew off the line, I settled into about a 6:15 pace and got passed by everybody. I saw 6:15 on my watch at 1, dropped my shirt at the start finish, then 13:00 at 2, which I thought was odd because I felt like I hadn't dropped the pace at all plus I had picked it up at the start finish area where all the spectators were cheering (for other people not me, but every little bit helps). (I have learned that you can never trust GCR mile markers.) Started lapping back markers at about 2.5 and passing a bunch of runners who had passed me earlier, like that one guy who started walking (as he passed me approaching 1, I was like, "wtf is this guy doing" he did not look fit, also, how can you be running at a 6:30 pace for over 2 miles without realizing you might be going a little too fast for your fitness), plus the guy about my age who passed me around the 3/4 mile mark who fell way off at this point, plus 2 of the 3 women that had passed me. Closing on 3, I see 19:16 on my watch and I kicked it in, around the corner seeing the clock, 20:06, then I sprinted in, stopped, dry heave, dry heave, wet heave, then I was better. A quick two mile cool down and looked at the results, chatted with Dermot, Laurel, Zach and CKC (happy to know she is still talking to me). 4th in AG all of us separated by 20 seconds, including Mr. Blankenship who had 19:57, he usually is a 19:30 guy, Rolon and Lyster, D Browne just ahead of me too. I would have placed in all but two other age groups.
