Nancy, Tom and I joined a seasoned bunch of Fog Dodgers for a trip on the Coastal Trail near Glass Beach. Perfect weather. Gun time was 8 AM sharp. Very sharp, no five-minute rule.

I chatted for an hour with the legendary distance runner Bob Deines. Born in 1947, Bob was a 2:20 marathoner as a 22-year-old. He ran 4th in the U.S. Olympic marathon trials. He later set an American ultrarunning record for 50 miles on the road.

Joe Henderson ended a profile of Bob in a 1969 magazine article.

"...Competition has always been for me an enjoyable experience," he (Deines) said. "The important thing is taking part and achieving victory over myself and my goals. Winning is not the most important aspect, and if too much emphasis is placed on it enjoyment is lost."

Future plans: "I don't foresee an end to my running career," he said. That statement says a lot about him."

Wow. Bob is on the trail with the Fog Dodgers more than half a century after the Henderson article was published! I am a witness.
