Newton 10K. Picked up Kristen at 7:30 to bring her to her Angry Chicken debut. Carbbed up mainly with beer last night so I wasn't quite sure how this would go. First mile I was just trying to stay with Kristen. We went through just under 6:45. Time-wise good for the 42:00 target, but effort-wise it felt too hard. Next couple of miles were just over 7, basically throwing 42:00 out the window unless I caught a second wind soon. Fortunately Chip caught up with me during those miles and we leapfrogged each other for several miles. I would pass him on the uphills and he would blow by me on the down. We caught up to Kristen who had fallen off her early pace a tad. I finally started to feel that second wind during mile 5 and got that one back below 7 (6:53). We caught Ally, traded encouragement (I think, I was tired) and turned back over the Pike. Mile 6 was another 6:53. Just before the marker I finally recognized where I was and went into a long kick. Man, that was a long straightaway finish. Ended in 42:54, 42 seconds off my PR and 26 seconds slower than Groton. But given the day a solid effort. Kristen ended up coming in with a great time at 43:30.
