Notes

Easy, solo 6 this morning. Ran from Jamie's apartment downtown. Water st. to 5th ave, bike path, campground, and then up twin springs road about as far as McCaffreys. If it had solely been up to my legs I would have gone further. I was consciously keeping a relaxed pace and I felt great. However the brutal temperature turned me around after 3 miles. My butt and quads were already starting to go numb. I wanted to keep going but knew I'd pay for it later. Even after only ~45 minutes outside I endured a painful thawing process upon returning home. It took a nice, long, enjoyable shower to feel better.

I need to figure out a better way to stay warm when we have -10 and -12 days like this morning. I wore a pair of spandex shorts and 2 pairs of tights and I still have about a 40 minute max timeline before I cant tolerate the pain much longer. I have a pair of ski pants I wear to run in when it's really cold and windy (which I didn't wear this morning because the wind was fairly tame) but they are heavy and I almost always feel sluggish with them on. I think I need a new pair of really warm tights. Perhaps fleece-lined? I've never had a fleece-lined pair. I wore my 2 warmest pairs today and still froze.

Ah well, hopefully we won't have too many more days like this one this winter. March is on the way!

Or maybe its far too early to think like that....

Uff-da, that does sound tough! I thought you and Brenna had matching pairs of fleece-lined tights?? Or did you just get her a pair?

I do recommend starting with getting a pair of fleece-lined tights. I wear them alone between 5 and 15-20 degrees and layer them when it's colder. For yesterday's run (0 degrees with a -20 windchill), I wore knee-high socks, spandex shorts, fleece-lined tights, and then a pair of yoga pants. Do you think that two pairs of tights might be constricting the

blood flow to your legs and exacerbating the problem? I know when my hands had the most trouble last year it was actually because my gloves were too tight (or at least that's my cause-and-effect explanation). Were your upper body and hands warm enough?

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. :( It's frustrating when things other than your legs and mental toughness limit your running.

Sounds like I need to get myself a pair of fleece lined tights! The ones I bought Brenna and I are not fleece lined.

And I'll look Into the blood constriction theory.
