I figured I had a shot at a PR after last weeks almost 5K so when I saw 6:07 for the first mile I was ok with it and just kept going. The course is two 6ish mile loops. The first half of the loop was definitely the harder half. It had a few more hill and a headwind.

The marathon and Half runners split at 2.75 miles in the race. Once the split happened I could still see Culla and Chris Smith up ahead but there was a pretty good gap until the next person. We went over the bridge and turned back towards the start. There was a tail wind and the course was flat the whole way back so these miles felt pretty easy. Took a GU around 5-6 miles.

As we approached the end of the first lap I passed Erin and the kids and got a nice boost but I was already starting to feel pretty tired. I could see Culla ahead of me and kept trying to close the gap on him. Before I could get Culla I got passed by the first place women around 7 miles. I tried sticking with her and the guy who was pacing her to bring me up to Culla but they were moving too fast. I stuck with them for maybe a quarter mile before letting them go(she ended running a 1:19. Maybe it was a workout?) Culla had a bad day so I reeled him in around mile 8. I definitely felt tired on the miles going out on the second loop. Once I crossed the bridge I got a second wind and felt decent for a little while. I pulled out my GU around 10-11 miles but felt like it wasn't going to help so just chucked most of it. I kept trying to close the gap on the next guy but I could never get closer then like 30 seconds away. Lost some seconds in the last few miles and really tries to hammer the last mile. A little disappointed I couldn't get that last mile to be sub 6.

Overall I can't complain about a 40 second PR given that it's my first real PR in about 2.5 years but I think if I had anyone to run with for most of the race I could have done a little better.
