Help me make my Wii fun (Read 1168 times)

xor

I bought a Wii today. Of course, this means I've fiddled around with tennis and bowling and baseball. My shoulder and head hurt now. And my dachshund learned to give me a wide berth. But the sports disc ain't gonna do it for me very long. I've tried the carnival games disc too at a friend's house and was bored senseless. What are some fun games? What are some dumb games that will simply part me from my cash? (I will go look up the following now the proper way, but I'll also ask here: Is there a usb plugin that will allow my Wii to talk to my wireless network? Or do I have to run cable?)

Defend your castle was good for about 2 weeks of constant play and petty arguments, after which it was thrown against the wall and never picked up again. Wii Fit hula hoop and balance board are cool. Still, my all-time favorite is table tennis. If you have a router then it should be easy to set it up - http://www.wiichat.com/nintendo-wii-online/5820-official-wii-wireless-internet-connection-guide.html

I hate hula hoop...holy crap did my back hurt the day after that one. I can't wait to try some of the Wii driving games. Everyone raves about Mario Kart and I have a feeling that it will end up under the tree for DS from one of the grandparents.

Mario Kart is tons of fun. Make sure to get the steering wheels. If you have multiple people, then I would recommend Rock Band. I played it on the XBox 360 and it's a blast. I also want to try Wii Music, it looks like it could provide some entertainment for a while. Otherwise I guess Tiger Woods Golf is fun if you are into golfing and there's MLB 2k8 that is pretty good as well if you like baseball.

We got "Music" for my nephews. My younger nephew is 6 and autistic, so I liked that it's non-competitive...simply creative. Rock Band or Guitar Hero look appealing to me. I know DS is interested in GH, too.

+1 on Mario Kart. We really like the Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones games. Challenging and lots of hidden features that keep it fresh.

Oh, cool...DS loves the little games on Lego.com, so I'll have to look for that. He has a birthday in Feb. (as do all the coolest people), so that might be good to put on the list.

We usually rent the one's the kids have an interest to let them try it out before we buy it. With a coupon we can get them for around $5 for a week. Not good if you want a surprise present but saves plunking down $50 on a game that goes over like a turb in a punchbowl so to speak. We also recycle games at Game Stop - take in our old one's that don't get played much and use that credit to reduce the price of the new game. Also Ebay is good for reduced price games if you can wait for a deal. Just a thought to save some dough in these times.

I have a friend who uses Game Stop a lot. We're definitely going to have to check that out. Our Wii is our first gaming system, so I'd never been in that store before.

So Mario Kart (which I never really got into back in the old super nintendo days) sounds like it is worth a look. Mario Galaxy has gotten thumbs up from several folks elsewhere... anyone here played it? I'll try the boxing game next. I couldn't handle it last night. Bowling was fun. Tennis was kind of fun once I stopped acting like a spaz. Baseball is what gave me a headache, I think. The Wii fit and balance board stuff is on my list because as a personal trainer, I'm interested in seeing what they've done. Alas, I can't find it. Hula hoop? Not my thing. I can't decide on the guitar hero/rock band stuff. I used to play in bands - that's what put me through undergrad. Seems like it might make me mad. Also, playing a lot of air guitar seems kind of embarrassing even though the only folks that would see it are my dogs and my roomie. And I embarrass myself regularly anyway. But I know they are all the rage. So I might. Thanks for all the info! (BTW, the Wii unit is in short supply in Seattle right now. I was in Sears yesterday for something else. Nobody, I mean NOBODY shops at Sears anymore. And so, in the corner, they had a pile of Wii units.)

Hi SLR! I got the Wii last year for Christmas and was a total bowling addict! I love to box too - especially cuz I beat almost everyone. Not a fan of baseball, but do the the tennis. Found golf to be a bit boring too. I've heard great things about the Mario Cart game. Our neighbor has it, but we haven't played it yet. I have guitar hero, but my kids play it more than I do. It was one of those Mother's Day gifts for themselves I guess. It is fun - but I don't find it addictive. I also want the Wii Fit along with the Jillian Michaels excercise "game?". I'm going to buy my husband the Cabela's Big Game game along with a couple of guns for Christmas. Good luck and let us know what you get and how you like it.

Yeah, we got ours a couple of months ago, then the Fit package a few days later. Even then the Fit was hard to find and I think DH got the last Wii Target had. We decided if we wanted it for Christmas we'd need to get it WAY before.

Dude, you have to pick up Gilad Janklowicz's Bodies in Motion for the WII. It takes the WII as a fitness tool to the next level. Clowning around If you're keeping the WII, buy the Gamecube Mario Kart and a few Gamecube controllers. There are plenty of decent games in the old Gamecube library you can get on the cheap. If you're into adventure games, I suggest getting Legend of Zelda Windwaker (Gamecube game) or whatever the WII Zelda game is. If platformers get you going, check out Viewtiful Joe. Children of co-workers seem to like the Mario games (Paper Mario, Galaxy, Paper Mario, Smash Bros, and Mario Party) and Katamari. Personally not much of a WII fan and still look at it as gimmicky. I'd rather have a PS3 or xbox360. Even better option I think is buying an HDTV and connecting it to an computer with a bunch of emulators (MAME, N64, PSX, SNES, NES, Genesis, Atari, etc), ROMS, and CD images.
