    That's one good thing about sucking hard, handicapping means nothing. Just keep sucking until one day you suck less.

      So, it's been a while now, plenty of soaking in time since your first marathon.  But not so much time that you've converted it all into a warm fuzzy memory.  Now is the time to quantify what you learned, and write it here so you can then refer back to it later when you need it. Also,  I'm curious. So let's see it...

      A list of my PRs in a misguided attempt to impress people that do not care.

        Well, still a bit of conjecture, but I do have a plan of sorts. I think the outcome of my first effort pointed to a few training flaws on my end and some things to work on:

        1) I really need to build strength training into my routine: core, hips, hamstrings and quads. ACTION PLAN: Addressing this now.

        2) If I want to get to the next level, I will need to run my next 26.2 at 190lbs.or less - I was 205 for this one. ACTION PLAN: Addressing this now (needs to happen by my next cycle).

        3) Now to the one that is less quantifiable for me, but clear enough. I over estimated where my fitness level was and clearly need to get a clue what speedwork should look like. Most of my speedwork had no purpose or meaning to it - I had no idea about the three thresholds and how one builds on each of them - most of my speedwork had been anaerobic in nature and was not training my body to efficiently burn fat under stress, at mp in the late miles. I was living to get through my long runs, not to build my aerobic threshold. ACTION PLAN: currently doing research on this one and will be smarter about this and my speedwork by my next cycle. Starting my research by reading Pfitzinger’s Advanced Marathoning - other suggestions?

        4) For the next 2 months or so, going to enjoy the race season, build some speed and slowly build my base back up, while strength training and trying to lose some weight. ACTION PLAN: weekly weigh ins on sunday AM - already dropped back to 201 last week, started core work and will begin taking Brian's class next week. Once my legs come back, will build some leg work in as well.

        5) Really need to get healthy - still beat up and need to figure out why my hamstrings are getting so tight and why they cramped at mile 19 other than just fatigue. ACTION PLAN: SMART recovery - lighter week this next week for me.

        6) NO warm and fuzzy feeling here - NOT satisfied with that effort and will train smarter to be better prepared - not harder, just smarter.

        Might be more than you are looking for, but that's my game plan and I WELCOME ANY AND ALL feedback - let this newbie have it.

          That's all good stuff. But that's all training stuff. What about when you actually line up to run marathon #2? What do you want to do differently?

            Not change a thing - got into this to BQ. My start was good, my pace was right, I took in plenty of electrolytes - all about training to me. I enjoyed my experience, loved the race itself, top notch company, great party and at the end of the day - had a blast. I'm going to continue to go for it and continue to have fun with it  - now I just have to be better prepared and better understand where I am with my training - other than that, I'm a let it fly kind of guy.

              sorry for being late but here...try this;

              good bye.

                As used by the armed forces - whack on, whack off. Thanks Cuch - always taking care of the newbie.

                  way back in the speedier day i ran to apocalyptica...i just listened to them today from since a long time and it reminded me of how i used them to make me faster, instead of that ticking sound thing you use that i can't understand how anyone could use with a smile. so these were the songs that got me moving fast to their beat...and the low tones of the cello would raise my hair on end which is to say it was like taking crack hits.

                    Man, I lead a sheltered musical life - kinda like apocalyptica....

                      Thanks for sharing, I jammed for a while at work yesterday.  Also getting into Epica, pretty cool mix of symphonic, metal, choir, melodic and growl vocals.
