how is it that people bring in tablets to watch movies/videos/whatever they are lookin at and shit in the exercise room at the y? does the y have wii-fi? or am i just a moron cause i don't know how they are doing that?

If you turn your wifi on your device will look for the network. It's "YMCA" or something with the letter Y. If you try to access the network it should connect. It's an open (unsecure) network, there is no password.
i am detecting a tone...don't get all bent with me. never done it...how am i supposed to know?

No there's no tone, sorry. If there's a tone, it is just my own stuff, nothing to do with this.
For me, I go to "settings" on my device. There's a little bar there that turns wifi on or off. If it is turned on networks are searched for.
Not really an expert here myself.
Just to add the the confusion. My devices find 2 networks at the Y. One is open and the other is private/secure. I don't understand why they broadcast the ID of their private network. But choose the one that shows up without the lock icon on it. Hope this helps. If it doesn't.... Well you know.
