Day 1000

Melanie drove me to Jefferson City and ran the first 1/2 mile with me as a show of support. She would have gone further, but I didn't want her to run over the Missouri River Bridge. Only idiots run over that bridge. She was great today and I couldn't have done it without her. I'm glad she was there to take me home once I reached Columbia. I must not have smelled very good, because as soon as we got home she escorted me straight to the shower.

Ran from Capital in Jefferson City, around the capital, up main to HWY 54, over Missouri River bridge (using bike lane) to Airport road over HWY 54 to path that leads to Katy Trail (2.86 miles) then to McBaine, to MKT trail to Scott Blvd in Columbia.

Preparation: Dropped off Gatorade, GU, and Bananas from 13.1 to 29 miles (Hartsburg to McBaine) on route. At Hartsburg and McBaine I also had a change of socks, underwear and singlet, in addition to bandaids, sunscreen and icy/hot.

On drive to Jefferson City this morning I had a 20oz gatorade, 1 cup of rice and 1/2 of a protein powerbar. Perfect.

Started running at 5:50am, from front of Capital. Ran around building to Main, to Hwy 54, across Missouri River to Airport road, over HWY 54 to trail that lead to N. Jefferson Access to the Katy Trail (that runs from St. Louis to Clinton). Distance to N. Jefferson access was 2.86 miles. Ran to McBaine (total distance 28.86) then another .3 before getting on MKT spur, which leads 8.8 miles to downtown Columbia. My watch started showing low battery just before 30 miles, so I made it to 30 miles and saved data. Then i used iPhone to time last 3.3 (32:48 or 9:56 av). I knew exactly how far out I was because my 30 mile mark took me to within 10 feet of the 8mm on MKT. Then it was 3.3 to Scott Blvd (Columbia city limits).

Wheels were coming off around 28, but i kept running. Decided that I had officially ran from J.C. to Columbia when I made it to Scott, so I called it a day! A good day. Longest run of my life and perfect weather. Temp 42 at start, 56 at finish.

My calves began to cramp up when i stopped for a gatorade break around 22.5 miles, so i didn't stop until I reached McBaine for fear of them locking up. Once at McBaine I put tons of icy/hot on them and that kept them loose till the end. Blisters were present at 13.1, but never got worse d/t the bandaids I put on them. Amazing.

Note: Mile 21 was about an 8:17. It is 1:30 longer because I took a pee but forgot to stop watch. No reason to believe it was any different from the one before or after.

TOTAL DISTANCE: 33.3 miles in 4:16:13 + 32:48 = 4:49:01

The only thing i would change is the poor training leading up to today.

Melanie threw me a party tonight and invited all my running buddies. We had a great time! My wife is a Saint to put up with all of this. Thank God she's not only a Saint, but a runner!
