Overall -- extremely happy with the PR. A bit disappointed in getting beat by a few people that I would like to beat...

So, didn't feel awesome leading into this, but I never do for a one mile -- SHOCK!!! ;)

Just tried to shut my brain off and let the body do what it is supposed to do. Did all the proper things beforehand and made sure that I got right on the line at the start. Even though there would be no chip timing, I didn't want to give anyone a head start. Saw Billig and JVD, but I was not paying attention to them -- I was just going to run my race and let the cards fall where they may. Got out and was not feeling stellar, but just trying to relax. Stole a couple of looks at the watch to see what pace I was running (just to make sure it was sub 5), but mainly just tried to key off people around me. Saw Brian and Anthony ahead of me as well as Kelly Boler who got out WAY HARD. Not sure what was up with that, but ended up beating her. So, just racing and at one point wondered why I hadn't hit a quarter split yet (they weren't marked). Looked at my watch and saw elapsed time of 1:48 -- oops, I forgot to switch to autolap at the quarters.

Oh well, pace still showed sub 5. Stay on it. Around this time I heard freight train breathing and feet slapping coming up on me -- wow, I was ahead off Billig. Interesting -- wasn't planned. Tried to latch onto him, but without much success. As we got to around what I thought was the 3/4 mark, JVD came up on me. When he did, I really tried to stay on his shoulder, but some serious self doubts started to crop in. Just bit my lip and tried to keep up with all my mite. Not much else to do, but race others and try to close the gap on Billig and JVD (JVD won the battle today). Was able to pass Kelly and Steve Stenzel. :) Unfortunately, another 51 year old was just ahead of me (I need to figure out who Allan Severude is so I know next time).

Bottomline -- GOAL Accomplished! I broke a PR from 10 years ago. I can't control what others do, but I can control what I did. And I did what I set out to do.

Unofficial manual splits:

01:12.3

01:15.3

01:17.1 -- Oops, this is where I opened the door for the others. :(

01:13.3 -- I will take this kick!!!

Great race - love the kick! Last quarter almost the same as the first? Seems pretty damn good in a mile race.

I wish I would have known that I relaxed in the third quarter. That is the difference in me being up there with the 1st place in my age group!
