Notes
I knew that I was in trouble when I saw the seed times for the race. Of the people that showed up, my seed time was 10 seconds slower than the next runner and there were quite a few that were 30 seconds faster than my seed time.
Waterfall start with me in the far outside position. This meant 150 meters in lane 4 before I could cut in. Got out hard but in control. After 50 meters, the speedsters on the inside came flying by. As expected. I was in touch with one runner at 200, but I sensed that he was fading already (seed time of 4:59 -- he ran 5:24). Passed him around 200 meters in and then I was in no man's land the rest of the way. Tried to stay on it, but I think I lost focus a bit. Didn't wear a watch so I was a bit blind. No clock to look at, but Rick Recker was reading splits. Unfortunately, hearing them verbally just didn't really work -- I think I needed the visual. Off the top of my head, I recall these:
200 -- 37
400 -- 1:16
600 -- ??
800 -- 2:36
1000 -- ??
1200 -- ??
1400 -- 4:38?
So, definitely faded during the 3rd 400, but I guess that is to be expected when you are running by yourself. I think I had more in me if I would have had someone to work with. I guess I shouldn't be too disappointed with this race -- but I am!!! On a positive note, I was not DFL, was not lapped and was closer to the runner in front of me than I thought. He must have REALLY faded.
