So, didn't exactly follow the race plan but it worked out OK anyway.
Plan was to be in 2nd, but nobody got out. So, I just stayed on it and was pretty much by myself after the half mile point. Came through the mile fairly hot, but had not had a chance to steal a look. Around 1.5 miles, we had a turn so I stole a look. Three running together probably 10 to 15 seconds back. So, just tried to lock in at around 5:50 pace and see what would come of it. There was an out and back at this point and I hit the cone at around 2.5 miles. 2nd place was about 18 seconds back of me at that point. Given it was a bit downhill, I decided to try to push a little bit to open the lead. Felt fairly comfortable and might have had a bit more if I wasn't running by myself.
Next chance I really got to steal a look was about mile 5. Still back there, but was fairly certain he wasn't going to catch me. so, I relaxed a bit going up the hill during mile 6. After that, the next chance I had to steal a look was just before the finish. Realized I was good, but wanted to finish fast -- so I did.
I think I ended up winning by 30 or 40 seconds. First prize got me a nice little trophy and $50 cash. NICE!!!
Jeannie also had a good race and was third in her age group. Superior treated us well!!!
