As soon as I am confident I am recovered here I am going to try to institute a BIG life change....force myself to run the majority of my mileage at 5-5:30am so it does not disrupt family life so much. If I can make the transition, my mileage should increase significantly.
I did the same thing when I made the move into ultras. Got into the habit of rising at 4am, on the trail by 5am, back at the house by 9am, ready to play Daddy by 9:30am. It was tough to begin with but I soon fell into a pattern, and the effort meant a lot to my wife and kids.
Thanks....assuming training does not get derailed I will be taking the hybrid approach....most of my training will not change but my long runs are going to get interesting. I read that as "...force myself to run the majority of my mileage at 5-5:30 (min/mile) so it does not disrupt my family life so much..."
Makes way more sense after doing the double take and seeing the "am" and not the "min/mile".
I guess I've got pace on my brain...I looked at my watch yesterday afternoon at work and saw 4:12 and thought: "damn, I wanted to be sub 3" before realizing 4:12 was 4:12pm and I was wearing a cleanroom suit instead of my running gear.
Good luck with your transition!
Either one would do the trick

Long dead ... But my stench lingers !
Best wishes to those running Marine Corps this weekend. That's a race I'd be interested in doing some day.
One more week left for me. Everyone doing NYC will probably be finished before I start my race in Fresno. The weather for me looks close to ideal next week. What's NY supposed to be?

Feeling the growl again
Ha, if I was in that kind of shape, I would certainly be rocking my races!

My buddy from the club Caleb Boyd is running for a sub3 bid as well... #9392. Brrrrilliant!

Congrats! Is your log accurate, i.e. did you really run a 2:51 with your biggest week being less than 40 miles??? That is pretty impressive.
Tahlgren - will keep an eye out for you. I'll be in a bright yellow Wellington Scottish singlet. Final decision is that I won't be attempting a sub 3, will be hoping for something around 3.05-3.10 given how everything has gone. But I will be back to try again next year.

I dunno what i'll be wearing. Eek, 7 days.
Yup, looks a bit careless to me but at least I know how to improve for the next one (Although I am super delighted about this first marathon )
Just ran a tune-up 1/2 in anticipation of my sub-3:00 attempt at Philly on November 20th. For those of you who have already done this, what time for the 1/2 would you say makes you confident of being ready to go sub-3:00 in the full?
It depends on your mileage and how much you tapered for the 1/2
I have ran 2x my 1/2M time 5 weeks later - But I usually am good for 2x 1/2M + 4 minutes
ex) 1:27 x 2 = 2:54 + 4 = 2:58
I think the worst I have done was
2x 1/2M + 5 minutes
If you are a lower mileage guy - I think most around here would like to be 1:25, but have been successful with 1:26 1/2M times
My 1st marathon was off avg 60MPW and was a 2:56 off a 1:26 1/2M time.
So after rambling - I think
1:25 - In like Flyn
1:26 - Solid for success
1:27 - Go for it - Riding the line
1:28 - If you are a high mileage freak

+1.
Dopple Bock can do 2XHM+4 because he is a long-to-ultra specialist....his HM is not as strong. This is the reverse of most of us.
2XHM+(4-to-6) is a good place to start if your mileage has been relatively high and your training is supporting the marathon well. If you are <60mpw it's going to be 6 or higher added on.
The top world marathoners now have HM PRs of 59:XX or even 58:XX. Say 59X2-1:58, record is 2:03-hi, or 2XHM+5.5. You're only going to beat that if you are really adding good fitness between the two, which screws up the predictive value anyways.

Even 6 minutes is unusual for non-elite males. On 60 mpw I'd say the old "double it and add 10 minutes" rule is probably aggressive for most people.
The best I've managed within a marathon training cycle is 2 x hm + 9 minutes.
Runners run
Along with what those guys said since they are all really fast and have broken 3, but what did you run the 1/2 in? And how did it feel? If you went all out and ran 1:25-1:26 I'm not sure if sub 3 would be there. But if you ran 1:25 and felt good at the end then sub 3 in a month is a realistic goal.
