Performance Enhancing Drugs (Read 128 times)

John Golfin

I am 51yrs old and have been running since 1988. I used to run 10km every day at 13km/h but now I am down to 10km, 4 times a weekly at 11km/h. My legs feel heavy when I run, I get regular shin splints, the occasional calf sprain and take longer to recover. Can you recommend some performance enhancing drugs that I can take to get back to previous form. Drugs that increase speed, stamina and recovery. I am not a competitor.

      Ask Lance?

I'm guessing that you're just trolling.  What kind of loser would take drugs in order to run as fast as they once could?  Perhaps try aging gracefully.

          Vitamin D!

There was a point in my life when I ran. Now, I just run.

                          1)  You're getting older.  It sucks, but beats the alternative.

                          2)  Running the same pace day after day is bound to lead to stagnation and a sluggish feel due to ignoring faster fibers.

                            SMART Approach

Age is definitely a factor. Has your weight gone up? As we get older, proper warm up and recovery time is crucial. I belief strength training, flexibility work becomes more important to avoid injury - more functional work, core etc. Good nutrition is important in recovery process and reducing systemic inflammation - more fruits and veggies help with this. To feel better during certain runs, take some caffeine 45 min - 1hour before runs or certain runs during the week. It doesn't need to be coffee, there are supplements you can get with caffeine. You will feel lighter on your feet. It depends if you like that feeling. I don't recommend using it before every run. Don't depend on it. Take as needed or 1 - 2 per week during faster runs.

If you don't currently ingest caffeine prior to running, be sure to test out how it affects your bowels prior to an important run or race!  It speeds up...everything.
