Sub 1:30 Half Marathon in 2018 (Read 704 times)

I was reading Saturday and I was impressed by all the good training sessions happened this week! Congratulations everybody on the good training going on!

JMac, wht happened to you after the intervals happened to me as well after the marathon in Lux. and after a couple of long runs with tempo. I thought the effort must mess up with the immune system ...

Flavio well done to your sister!! I remember when I first came back to run and didn't manage 5 K. it took me weeks of training to just get back and to run them, let alone 40 min. Now I am back on my original running schedule, but it takes effort, so congratulations!

As Rune, I took 2 days off this week as well, so  I was worried about getting to the 40 miles benchmark, but I managed with a couple of strong sessions the hare 10X 600 mt. on Monday and a 8 miles with 4 miles HM pace (6:45 aiming for 6:50) on Thursday. I took it easy the reminder of the week, and managed 44 miles.

On Saturday I ran 10 miles, driven 450 and flew to Italy with the family spending the night between busses and airport (didn't sleep), so I took Sunday off and today a short and easy 4 miles.

The past week was my 4th week above 40 miles after the Lux Marathon (considering a week of taper, a week of race and a week post race for the Lisburn Half marathon, I am happy with how is proceeding). From now it should be all above 40 Miles for the summer, increasing tempo and intervals.

    PRs since re-started in 2013:

    5km: 19:43 (Belfast park run Sep-16) | 10km: 40:16 (Belfast Lagan side 10K Sep-18)

HM: 1:30:09 (Belfast city Half Marathon, September-18) | FM: 3:25:05 (official chip time Belfast city Marathon, May-19, marathon was 0.3/4 longer, original time 3:27:20 for 26.5/6...)

    RIP Milkman

Rune - Well done. That ETETE workout you did on Sunday looks brutal when sober, let alone after drinking in the morning! I tried the drinking day of and running later once in my life and it was horrible even though I only had 2 beers. Decided I would never do it again. Good luck on the 5x1K.

Piwi - Right after I wrote that post, I decided to have 2 ice cold beers before bed.

Marco - You should add your next race into your signature, it helps lazy people (me) know what your schedule looks like.

Drinking wine Saturday, running Sunday. The problem was that almost all of Saturday was spent with a wine glass in my hand   If I had tried to  run Saturday evening I would have failed after half a mile

Ah got it, still hard! I see that I have that workout coming up in a couple of weeks (1E, 2x2T, 8E, 2T, 1E). I always forget that you're giving me a preview of the pain train that is heading my way.

Piwi - I haven't noticed any big differences (maybe outside of intervals on a track) with my Garmin but I don't really look, either. I know Strava does their own smoothing with GPS data, plus I think they round distances as well.
            Good week.

Mick - Bummer about the niggle still being there, but feeling stronger is always good.

Flavio - Awesome for you sister!

Steve - Glad things seem to be looking up with the calf. I like your idea of switching to a tempo instead of intervals given your history with that.

            JMac - Good week.

Rune - Great job on all the workouts and getting that 50+ in.

Hangovers - I avoid these quite easily as I don't drink.

Not much of a week for me last week, but marathon training formally started today!
It was pretty darn hot (80F/26) and humid when I started my LR Saturday. I foolishly thought I'd try getting in a few M effort miles towards the end of that and ditched that idea after 2 miles. The conditions just got to me and my stomach started to turn - plus at M effort/pace my HR was above LT levels . Took it easier the rest of the way back. I saw a bunch of the local super-fast guys running around the lake - including the guy who won his debut marathon this spring (~2:30, going for the win and not for time).

I've amazed myself sometimes after a heavy day/night of drinking...it has to be an early start and finish though, if I'm still drinking at midnight then a run the next day is very very unlikely.

I did a tempo last night, 70 mins with 3x2km with 2 minutes rest between each.  I was obviously going to ease off if any serious pain but it felt okay, just the occasional twinge that in the normal course of events I wouldn't worry about.  The tempo kms were 4:03-4:09, still faster than I wanted but felt comfortable.  Overall 15.95km @ 4:31 mins/km so if I can handle that I think I gave my legs long enough to heal.  I'll still be cautious for the next few runs.

Rune - nice week, where was the wine tasting?  That was something we meant to do when we were over in SF a few years ago but just ran out of time.  There are some great wineries around there.

Marco - nice week and good consistency on the mileage!

Steve - positive signs on the tempo and injury front.

Watson- I just noticed you are doing the 5 Bridges half in your sig.  Do you have a goal in mind yet?

Rune explained it in detail at least for me as a drunk but neither Jmac nor Mark got the details - what does that say about me. I take drinking seriously Smile

I spent a couple of days in the Napa Valley and did a wine tour even though I'm not really a wine drinker.  It was fantastic, and I even discovered there's some sweeter white wines that I actually like.  Although my highlight of the day was an awesome old school outdoor burger place.  Thankfully I did a long run in the morning so didn't have to worry about calories

                        Great weeks from everyone!

I'm glad I got in my first real workout since the marathon, the tempo felt good, although it felt a little harder than it probably should have. Lately, I've been feeling fatigued after runs, even though I'm running slower than I ever have. My heart rate and breathing are quicker than they should be, despite the slower paces. Maybe I didn't rest up enough after the marathon, has anyone else had this happen?  I will probably take off most of next week to rest up, as I will be on a mission trip.

Matthew - yeah I copped it pretty bad after the marathon I did last year.  Didn't actually feel that fatigued, but it turned out I was, then I got ITB issues and wasn't really 100% until 3 months after the marathon itself.  If you're feeling a bit of fatigue, best bet is to take it easy for a bit.

Matt - After my last marathon my weekly mileage was as follows for the next weeks: 10-30-40-30-45, with the 10 just being easy runs on Saturday and Sunday the weekend after the race. Everything else was easy, although I started including some very light strides the third week and some easy workouts at the end of week 4.

I have always ran in Asics Nimbus but couldn't handle the change when they went to the Nimbus 20 so I switched to Brooks Ghost 10

they are ok but not as happy with them as I was with my old Asics.
