Why Is the Republican Field So Extreme? (Read 2137 times)

I believe that what makes a citizen is not birth, but a willingness to put the good of the group ahead of his own well-being.

    Socialist!

Hint: don't go to running websites if you don't want running news.

Yeah, you're right. (For the record, I wasn't serious.)

        Socialist!

        Possibly.

However, I would say that one would have to prove one's desire to place the group before oneself, preferably through some form of nasty type of job, like the military, or the Peace Corps in some sort of hot, jungle-y type of place.

Obviously, there are many different takes on the above.  Personally, I believe that what makes a citizen is not birth, but a willingness to put the good of the group ahead of his own well-being.

I would agree that it would be good if people thought this way, but if anyone thinks that this sort of "good of the whole" thinking is what drives more than a fraction of the people in the voting booth you're fooling yourself.

I wonder whether the "good of the group" would be qualified as "good of the group today" or "good of the group tomorrow".

I agree with your statement, but I think that future generations should be considered at all times (b/c I didn't originally read your words as a "socialist" comment).

It seems like politicians defer issues for future generations (both left and right).

Seems like tackling today's challenges today would be appropriate and "best for the country".

              Oh, I'm well aware.

Hence the reason that only people who have done said term of service get to vote.

I don't get it. The liberals here should be jumping for joy at the extremist candidates. If they are so bad the Big O get the keys to drive the car for another four years. What seems to be apparent is that deep down in places you don't want to admit you know he's failed at leading our country and he's an empty suit. Its hard to admit you bought a lemon equal to Carter but it can't be blamed on Bush or those bad Congressional Repubs or high waters or natural disasters. So you want to focus on the extreme group to take away focus from the current mess presided by the liberal extremists where there may be someone with some leadership and policy changes to help get us moving in the right direction. Running is about Do or Do Not and personal responsibility with some decent help or advise on this board. Too bad that seems to end with running.

My running experience has been completly different. I rely on a number of people to help me through the weeks. Perhaps I'm lucky that I have an understanding wife, great club and plenty of opportunity to race.

And we run because we like it

Dude, what an interesting idea. Extend the lessons you learn from running and connect them up with larger philosophical issues. Someone should totally blog that shit.

Those are hands up, not handouts.  In the end, you must still get out the door, do all the training, and run your race.

I guess I'm not upset that I got Carter, I'm just unexcited because I George H. W. Bush. That said, it's not entirely a bad thing either. I'm not buying that any liberal extremist policy has been enacted. Focusing on the extremist group probably does help the left...why then are we talking Perry and not Huntsman?

Are we really going to play the game of "the true conception of running supports XXX political ideology?"

                              Come on now.

I just heard a segment about Huntsman on NPR. Apparently he tweeted that he trusts scientists on evolution and global warming. Big news from the primary front!
