Forums >Racing>What and how much to cut in a cut down week
Joggaholic
I have a 5k coming up in 1.5 weeks and I'm trying to run a good PR attempt, so I want next week to be a cut down week. I'm wondering how much and what to cut? Lower mileage/time on all the runs, or just lower the intensity of the workouts, or add a couple complete rest days (or all of the above)? I have found that I do better after an easy run day rather than a complete rest day, so I worry about cutting too much. Given it's only a 5k I suppose I won't have to cut a lot, under my current load my legs are ok, but just never fresh and springy, which is probably not a desirable condition pre-race.
Thanks.

For all my most important races I like to do an "exponential decay" style of taper that roughly follows the ideas presented in this link.

Lower intensity, and only for the 2 or 3 days before the 5k.

Thanks Cecil & Mike. Good article. I'll start my worry next week then.
