Okay, maybe someone can clarify. What's a grandma? (Read 1395 times)

Baby bean!

as in a grandma marathon? I've never heard that phrase before. Blush

Grandma's was a restaurant. Or really a chain of them. Learn about Grandma's Marathon here. It is a well-managed race in Minnesota with some pretty views that has a big following in the marathon community. Me? I like Twin Cities better. Grandmas vs Twin Cities is kind of like coke vs pepsi.

Yep, big race in a small town. Best of both worlds. But they are fascists about iPods.

LIARS! Sorry, I'm just trying to prop up the whole Twin Cities vs Grandmas thing. Grandmas is pretty cool, especially now that they don't do registration as weirdly as they used to do it. But lodging can be a real pain. Or not. I know people who have gotten lucky. Where "lucky" is defined as paying $150/night, two night minimum, for a scary, beat up, old motel room.

I don't you know what you mean. The Bates Motel just across the border in Superior, WI has great rates. The shower curtain needed to be replaced but otherwise, it was a great deal.

Yeah, they told me it was a "superior room". I didn't know that meant "a crappy room in Superior".

I should put some bunk beds in the garage and rent it out for 50 bucks a night. Showering with the garden hose would be an additional 10 bucks....anybody interested? Big grin

Sold.... I paid $200 a night for a holiday in express Angry Plus the first half of the marathon smelled like fish. Well parts of it anyway... I really hate fish.

Hot humid marathon...OK the year I ran it anyway Very pretty Expensive hotels...althought I paid just $100 Smile Beer at mile 24 usually Great food at the finish, including ice cream. I like Twin Cities better too, and Coke. srlopez, I listend for the bells, I heard bells at mile 2, nothing at mile 25. But the St. Paul capital is quite the welcome sight when you get over the hill.

Grandma's is a great marathon, well organized, very pretty. The weather is usually cool, although the past 3 years have been just the opposite (much like many other marathons). GREAT postrace party. It is named Grandma's because the restaurant bought forever naming rights years ago for $300. The food at the restaurant ain't bad, but the scenery around it is much better. Hotels are pricey and crank their rates up for the weekend. That is the major issue. You need to register a room nearly a year ahead.

Which is a faster course? Grandma's or Twin Cities? I've run both twice - did I get faster or is Grandma's a faster course? Assuming the weather is the same...

Assuming the weather is the same... which it isn't, usually... it is Grandmas, no contest. The Twin Cities course isn't over-the-top hard and it can be fast, but it gets hard towards the end (M20-24)... when you don't want hard. BUT... if you catch Grandmas during an 80-degree weekend, all bets are off. Here is the Grandmas elevation chart. At the bottom of this is the Twin Cities elevation chart.
