I would have to guess some of my answers since it was such a long time ago when I ran my first one (1973). I ran over 30 marathons and every single one I finished was BQ (one DNF would have been BQ if I just walked the last 6 miles, but that was not my concern).
I ran tons of miles for my best marathons, but I also BQed from zero running (two years ago when I ran my personal worst which was BQ by 20+ minutes), but I'm probably not your typical recreational runner.
