I have the 230, which is the same but without HRM, and I only have to charge it maybe once every 6 runs, and my watch is over 3.5 years old at this point. So it's definitely the HRM draining the battery.

It's funny that I used to use HR, but have completely abandoned it. Has anyone else given it up on it?

I have 935, which, I believe, is a triathlon version of 235. I maybe charge it once per 6-7 days and I ran a few 100Ks with HR turned on and by the end of 100K I still had about 30% of battery left. No way I would abandon the watch HR - it made all the difference, yes, it behaves erratically from time to time, sometimes for a mile or two, but 99% it's pretty much spot on. It is so much more convenient than the chest HRM and chest HRM, even the latest version still was producing crazy data too. So, I guess I will have to leave with the fact that the HR will be incorrect sometimes, but still, it's absolutely a must for me - I would never, ever, buy any watch without HR - no way...

I also really really like having HR on a watch.  For all runs, I like to look at it after the fact (just like pace).  For easy runs, I look at it while running to keep a check on myself.

However, I've found the wrist HR just completely unreliable (and this was on the 935 - perhaps the 735 will be better).  I suspect it's that I have very small wrists, so it's hard to get a good fit and a consistent reading.  So I just wear the chest strap.  The chest strap also gets me the running metrics like GTC balance that the wrist does not.  And....unlike the majority of posters on this thread, I'm always wearing something tight around my chest anyway when I run (sports bra).  I don't have to crank the chest strap too tight since the sports bra holds the strap in place, so the chest strap is probably less burdensome and irritating for me than it would be for a man.

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

Congratulation Flavio! nice to have another fellow Italian here officially on paper too. Now, I think you are getting too excited: new shiny ID card? I have been made fun by all types of authorities for my ID card, it's literally a piece a paper with a foto (Unless they give you something better, to keep the new Italian happier Smile

anyway, I am so happy for you! nice!

I have been watching the forum without writing too much as I have been busier at work. in the last couple of weeks i tried to recover (below 40 miles) as I feel tired when running, but it is no working that much, so tomorrow I am going for a long run, and from next week I will fit in one or two actual training sessions (repeatitions or Thresholds). I'll be conservative over the summer (there s no rush to get back running fast) and will try to gain some fitness for a sub 90' HM in January.

in other news, mark, I loved your post about what we will all remember from 2020... made me laugh, so true, garmin does not work, much worse than lockdown for some runners Wink

                   IN OTHER NEWS:

After an excruciatingly 6 month long wait, today I have finally been recognized an Italian citizen. I'm going by the city hall tomorrow to receive my Italian birth certificate which makes it official. I've been dreaming about this day for 15 years.

I was born on a tiny town of 3000 people back in Brazil where 90% of the people spoke Italian and I still carry an Italian accent when speaking Portuguese to this day (which is funny because I probably carry a Portuguese accent when speaking Italian).

I'm very thankful to Mamma Italia for recognizing her son even after 150 years that my great grandfather emigrated to Brazil.

A few more days and I'll have the shiny Italian ID card and passport which will grant me visa free access to about 20 extra countries.

                  I'm beyond happy and relieved

Flavio - Congratulations!  Have you kept your Brazilian citizenship, or did you have to renounce it to become Italian?  My wife had to renounce her Chilean citizenship to become American, but the Chileans don’t seem to recognize that renunciation, so they consider her Chilean, and she can have a passport if she wants one.  Our son can become Chilean (without losing his U.S. citizenship) if he applies before he turns 18 next year, but he’s not interested.

I felt a bit better this week after a down week.  My tempo run was about as fast as my last one three weeks ago, though in easier conditions.  Retired a pair of Reebok Forever Floatride Energy shoes after 600 miles, 100 more than I’ve run in any other pair since high school.  I think the softer dirt and grass helped extend their life, but maybe my legs will feel fresher in the new pair next week.  Garmin’s problems haven’t affected me since I don’t have a smartwatch (or a smartphone; I may have been Amish in a prior life).  Signed up for my August 22 5K and think I’m in a start wave with the other 20-or-below people.

                    Sun - off

Mon - 12.1 easy, felt bad late but maybe b/c TDP 161

Tues - 7.9 easy including strides

                    Weds - 10.6 easy

                    Thurs - 23 minutes swimming

                    Fri - 6 on track including 3.5 @ 6:29

                    Sat - 7.7 easy & very slow

                    Total - about 44.3 miles

                    12/26/52-week averages - 45/43/38 mpw

James I would like to try the Reeboks sometime. Good to hear your energy levels are back up.

I had a good week getting in intervals and a tempo. I dialed back the intervals to between 5 and 10k pace which really left me feeling good about the workout and enabled me to recover for the next workout. I had a rest day Saturday but doubled friday to make up some mileage. Solo long run today as the group didn't seem to be happening.  They tend to run at 4.30/km pace from start to finish where I prefer to warm into a run and finish faster.

I've got 9 good weeks behind me now and feel like I'm making good gains. My long runs are feeling really good towards the end instead of me wanting them finished.

Piwi - nice week again, you are definitely getting some consistent mileage in there!  5 weeks to go.

Me - this was a recovery week which I kind of needed to be honest.  Definitely a bit of fatigue after last Sunday's long run with the long MP section, and it took until Saturday for me to really feel fresh again.  Will play this week a bit by feel but I'm looking at doing Hobsonville Pt Parkrun next Saturday which is restarting as the remedial works at Bomb Point are finished now.  Wonder if I'll see old mate Johan there?

Mark, piwi and James - great weeks.  Some good consistent training happening in this thread right now!

flavio - congrats on becoming full Italian.  Will you be looking for work there or is all your work remote?

Feeling much empathy to all those training in crazy hot and humid weather at the moment.  It's pretty cold here but I'd still prefer it this way.  Yesterday when I was planning to run it was too cold so I waited an hour or so and it was great - in an hour it went from -6C (21F) to 5C (41F) which was much nicer.

My week was a bit lighter with 1 week to go until the race.  On Wednesday I blew it - couldn't really see the watch in the dark so was running by feel.  Was miles quicker than the targeted 4:15 (got up to 3:59).  My coach emailed me on Friday with a good telling off and a reminder that it won't help me reach my goal.  Yesterday I was very disciplined but relied on my watch.  The 4km of race pace was 4:15, 4:15, 4:20, 4:12.  It felt really comfortable although the third km felt quicker than 4:20 - the watch suddenly dropped to 4:35 at one point so I don't think it's accurate and may have led to the speed up in the 4th.

Now for the first time since April 2019....it's half marathon race week!  I have a zoom call with the coach on Tuesday night to plan race strategy and I imagine he'll want to work out a recovery period to help avoid the common (for me) post race injury.

Thanks everybody for the congratulations. Very happy day yesterday.

Darkwave - I agree we’re missing the cool emoticons like the dancing banana and the beer glasses clinking.

I agree the wrist heart rate might not work well on small wrists. I’ve been investigating that for my wife, and the alternatives are the Fenix 6s and the vivofit watches (which is a touch screen). I guess the finish women are all giants.

Piwi - Haha, cool, that’s a steep cost, though I wish I had that option.

Thanks for the technical support Big grin

Watson - New shoes, awesome, thanks for the shoe porn !

Marco - thanks man. That’s because you still have the paper one, I’ve seen how those are. Since a couple of years ago they are now issuing one that looks like a credit card, with a chip and all.

James - Yup, I will have dual nationality. I reckon the US does not allow certain people token their original citizenships, the Brazilian fighters who became Americans also had to renounce theirs.

                            Awesome week!

Steve - still remote. I like to be geographically independent and also it pays way more.

It looks like you you're drilling in the pace for a sub 1h30 half.

                            me - A nice week 57k 35 miles.

                              Hey all,

I took a self-imposed web vacation followed by a real vacation so it's been a couple weeks. I'll catch up on the thread latter but wanted to drop this here:

                              Week 13-19: 60.7 miles.

                              • Mon 7 miles including 6 strides and 4 accelerations from mile to best relaxed effort on a football field in the middle.
                              • Tue - 9 miles including 6x800@CV (3:06-11). Nailed it
                              • Wed - 6 mi AM, 7.5 @ noon, both easy on the same trail system near work (hilly!).
                              • Thur - 13.6 long run (really 20k, then drop car at mechanics and run another mile and a hlf).
                              • Fri - REST
                              • Sat - 9.3 mi w/ about 3.5 at tempo effort in two parts, w/ 90 sec walk between. On trails, hilly, hot, humid but still strava says it's my second fastest effort ever on that loop!
                              • Sun - 7.8 easy.
                              • 1 swim of 1.1 mi
                              • 1 10 mile bike ride

Solid week, legs were shot by Sunday.

                              Week 20-26: Family camping/vacation week! 30 miles

                              * Mon - 14 miles around the lake. Calf issues cropped up and I had to stop to stretch a number of times =(

                              * Tuesday - BIKE CRASH. My shoulder is in pain. Doc says it's fine, take prednisone, a muscle relaxant and it will get better every day

                              * Wed - 2x2 mi @ tempoish effort. Basically from campground to beach, family swim, then back. First portion with the pupper second solo but HR & paces were right at 7:10/mi for each (yuck). I paid particular attention to the shoulder and it didn't seem to bother me or tighten up much.

                              * Thur - Easy 4.7. Looked at HR after and it went way out of easy range. That direct sunshine is brutal.

                              * Friday - Tempo 2.5 on some prairie trails in the campground. Really felt like I was moving and the HR reflects it but actual pace was  8/ mi.

                              * Sat - REST / bike around the lake w/ the kids, making 3 stops for ice cream. lol.  One last dip in the lake and lots of regret I didn't get to waterski.

                              * Sun - 4 mi tempo + 1 mi CD. Stupidly decided to just show cadence on the watch and refused to let it drop below 170 (easy runs = 163-5 for me) so the efffort just kept climbing. Got some warning signs from the calf at mile 4 and pulled back to normal easy effort.

Training wise I'm not happy with this last week but given the circumstances I'm just super happy that my shoulder allows me to run at all. I have some clear pain when lifting things and bringing it across my body but general mobility has improved every day.

The goal for next week is to basically replicate the week of the 13th-19th while listening to my body. My sleeping HR was 44 last night which is really high for me (usually 38-41), I'm hoping getting off the prednisone, sleeping in my own bed and not drinking with my brothers every night will fix that but if need be I'll cut things back. OTOH if things do go well, I'd love to progress to 7th CV interval and remove the walk break from the Sat. tempo. We shall see what happens.

Flavio - congratulations on the citizenship!!

Going way back. Dogs are a bane at some of my favorite trails. I find slowing to a walk and not looking directly at them helps... but there are days I don't want to do that so I just cross my fingers and hope for the best.

New Balance FuelCell Rebel!? Look very nice. Someone needs to explain their whole lineup to me some time. I love the zante pursuit and Nitrel trail V3 (V2s were horrible bricks) but could really use a racer and an easy day shoe. Speaking of easy day shoes, my Saucony Iso have gone from "super cushy, I love them" to "bleh, what are these are unstable, mushy blocks on my feet" after 300 miles.

DW - I too struggle greatly with Wrist HR. Thankfully my new Coros Apex (42mm) seems to be really reliable. None of my Garmins or Suunto watches were worth a darn in that regard. I've recently begun showing only duration and HR on my easy runs, and have turned auto-lap off. It really makes it easier to just chill out and enjoy the run. The battery life in the Coros is simply the best I've ever seen.
