Piwi - I finished the marathon, but originally signed up for the 50k. I'll do better for the next 50k...
Watson - Sounds to me like you're cleared for VO2Max work! Or is that supposed to be all easy? Details matter!
Caffeine - If I take any for a race it's probably in the form of rungum since it seems to hit so quickly afterwards - maybe 10-20 minutes, tops, in my experience. Mid-race I'll do gels, though, since I'll probably have far enough to go that I can spare an hour before I need it to kick in, so long as I plan the dosage correctly according to race distance or time.

With the exponential growth in corona cases that I’m sure is about to start in NYC, I’m not sure about the half. Regarding Boston, I agree that at that point, we’ll probably be at the “we can’t stop this, let’s just try to minimize the risk” stage, but I can’t imagine Boston will be run if that’s the case. It’s more about the spectators than the runners: people huddle into small spaces for 30+ minutes. Again, if you follow that, mass transit should be shut down, but private organizations are going to be very worried about their liability.
Also I went to the doctor today and tested positive for the flu. It’s an odd world we live in when I’m happy that’s what I tested positive for. Anyway, that probably means another few days off, so NYC Half would have been challenging. Just gonna take both the illness and the race one day at a time.

oh wow this thread exploded.
Rune - thanks for sharing the workouts. I'll see what I can do with them but I clearly need to listen to the podcast to understand some of the lingo. I'd love to be able to swim 1.5 hours every day and have it not take a major toll on my running but... I sadly don't have that type of time. I'll see what I can manage.
Elizabeth - as someone who made a point of doing a bunch of critical velocity workouts a couple cycles ago ... that post race workout is amazing. You really are a workout warrior!
Watsonic - good luck with the rehab, the walk breaks drive me crazy but I love Keen's comment that you're clear to do VO2 work.
CaronaVirus - I just don't understand the hysteria. Yes, you can be super careful but are you going to avoid everyone for the rest of your lift? It almost feels like we should just let the virus spread and get this over with (if you're over 60 then I understand the worry). Get sick, let your body fight it, recover. Isn't that how these things work? Clearly I'm not a doctor.
I had an unplanned recovery day day yesterday. I just couldn't drag myself out of bed for my group run and work got so busy I couldn't run at lunch. Thankfully I got to head to my LRS for a vertical treadmill challenge. 15% grade, 5 minutes, go as far as you can.I was fairly certain I could manage a KM, but ... I was wrong. I started out at 6.6mph and it was hard within 30 seconds. I just held onto that pace the rest of the way and went .55 miles, no free shoes for me =( Regardless,I got to stuff my face with food and beer afterwards.
1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)
One big reason to SLOW the spread of coronavirus is that having a big spike will exceed the capacity of health services.
Problem Child
What are Health Services going to do for a virus?
Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Treat the symptoms and any ancillary stuff. Obviously no need for someone relatively healthy, who can just lay in bed for a week and drink fluids. But for the elderly, stuff like an IV drip, oxygen, and managing any other infections or issues that pop up while one is fighting off the virus can be crucial.
Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.
And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.
Watson sounds like some good progress.
Zebano what's your Strava name I will follow you
Jmac we played you in basketball today sorry about the thrashing
I ran my longest run for 4 months today, an 18km after 4 months of mostly only 8km runs.
For some silly reason I decided to make it progressive which became quite hard as I turned into a headwind at halfway and had to finish with a sub 4km.

Zebano - I'm kinda with you. It's really not that different to the flu. The hysteria is a bit silly. One of the handful of local cases was in our suburb. The family got mercilessly cyber-bullied despite doing everything right. People suck, sometimes.
Piwi - love the Captain America shirt. I bet Captain America doesn't have to worry about the coronavirus.

Yes, let's get this thing over with before I turn 60 (in a couple of years).
As I had suspected, there have been some cancellations at the hotel near the half I'm considering running in April. As a result, I was able to get out of the pet-friendly room I had reserved a while back (the last one available at the time) and get a pet-hostile room, which is good for us since DW is allergic to cats. It's a small race, so I assume it's not as likely to be cancelled as larger ones, but I'm still holding off on registering.

Legs felt pretty sluggish at the start of the week, but great for Saturday's long run. Not sure why coach put my track session on Sunday but it was tough getting the legs turning over the day after a long run. Probably another reasonable volume week this week, and then a lighter week next week with the Albany Lakes 10km / final race of the North Shore Run Series on Sun 22nd.

Cfar thanks but the weedkiller container from my wifes gardening stuff probably isnt practical
Mark nice week. I heard about that cyber bullying. My 14 year old has been home all week with a cough. The only time hes affectionate with me is when hes sick and does his best to pass his germs on I wore the captain america shirt today on my run and averaged 6 min/km
I ran 69 kms this week with one mini tempo day where I strung together 3 sub 4 min kms ( hey its a start ) and an 18km progression yesterday starting at 5.30/km and finishing at 3.55/km.
Had a pretty good track workout Sunday, 5x1200 with 3:20 rest averaging 4:29, faster than usual for this point in a cycle. Started out with 4:25, surprisingly fast for my first such workout since October, but faded a little the rest of the way, to 4:32 for the last 1200. Got in 45 miles for the week. Am quite lucky (and probably jinxing myself by mentioning it) not to be sick, between being outside for several hours in cold and windy Atlanta last Saturday watching the Olympic trials marathons, running in heavy rain Tuesday and Thursday, and DW being unusually sick all week with what we don’t think is coronavirus.
On Thursday one of my eccentricities paid off. When the weather is between 40-60F, small variations in temperature and wind and rain can make a big difference in my comfort and what I want to wear, so I often bring several shirts of different thicknesses and sleeve lengths and a couple of beanies and pairs of gloves and choose my combination when I get to the park. I also change tops & headgear before stretching at the end of runs if it’s cool or cold, because I don’t want to stand around all sweaty. On Thursday, it began pouring not long after I started, and I was absolutely soaked in the first couple of miles, so I figured I’d bag it and run in the afternoon. Got in the car, changed into dry clothes, had some Gatorade and a protein bar, and by that time the rain had slacked off, so I was able to get in another 10, only because of the dry clothes.
Sun - 6.8 miles, including 5x1200 @ 4:29
Mon - 7.3 easy @ 8:45
Tues - 10.3 easy in rain @ 8:48 because I was tiptoeing around ever-growing puddles
Weds - off
Thurs - 12.6 easy, 2.6 before deluge, 10 more after short wait
Fri - 8.3 easy
Sat - off
Total - 45.3 miles
12/26/52-week averages - 39/36/35 mpw

RunningAhead - If you type runningahead.com on the browser you hit a 503 error page. If you type www.runningahead.com it works.
Zebano - I intend to use this tool for any forum, I’m still burned by the runners world forums closure.
Jmac - I’ll mention about the new virus on my own update.
Piwi - I can see the issue with the table generator, I’m using server timezone to figure out the day of the week,
I’ll adjust that for the next week so you don’t have to wait till Monday.
Brew - you will easily break 90 minutes. It’s hard to run race pace during workouts, you must be a race warrior like myself.
Keen - Altra is surely going that route with the Paradigm. It’s got a stiff plate in the sole.
Caffeine - as an ex - coffeeholic caffeine hits instantly, it goes straight to my head in the form of a headache.
New coronavirus - The issue is not the mortality rate. It's the hospitalisation rate. The hospitals near Milan are overcrowded with people and that's also impacting people with regular injuries requiring ICU care because all beds are taken.
That's why half of Italy is now in quarantine. Not proper quarantine since it seems airports are still running for instance.
I feel for the people working at the hospitals because they're working so much right now. I think we talked about this before, but when something is far away we tend to not care too much, it's only when it's touching our lives that we pay more attention.
This will cripple the economy, never mind the immense human loss, not only in the form of the deaths, but the people who will have long term effects, like the people from the SARS era did. People will lose their jobs, it will get bad.
And I'm talking about a first world country with one of the top health facilities in the world, where health care is universal, not just for the rich.
On a side note, all the 3 cities where I was planning to race are now in quarantine until early April at least. There's a possibility those races will get cancelled.
Eventually people will realize the virus can't be stopped, but hopefully it'll trickle down a bit so it does not hit all at once like right now.
Altra Shoes - I've done a small surgery on my new Paradigms, the tongue was stuck to the side of the shoe and that was putting pressure on the top of my feet. I've cut the tissue that was locking it and now the tongue is free. Less pressure on the top of the feet now so I'm happy, though that stiff plate in the sole is annoying as it won't let my feet work. I'll keep this for recovery runs I guess.
Me - My week below. Notice after copying the table generated by the tool I've edited it to add the weight training
