Back of the packers??? (Read 1143 times)

Cause I CAN

Peach, back in the mid 90's we had a guy on our Compuserve Running & Racing forum who missed being eligible for the Olympic Marathon Trials by less than 2 minutes. Naturally we all hailed him as a hero. One day he put up a tear jerker of a post identifying the 4, 5, and 6 hour marathoners as the true heros. He said "I run as hard as I can for 2 hours and 25 minutes but YOU people go as hard as you can for over twice that long. I could never do it" He's right ..... always think of yourself as a hero, and a marathoner. Wink
I should be asleep but had to respond to this...marathoner, yes...hero, not so sure about that but thanks, sweet of you...ok now I'm going to sleep Big grin

    Slow-smooth-fast

Speed, progress and goals are all relative to time on your feet. Here, since I started running this is how my goals have progressed, and you will see for yourself how you get better. 1.Run for 5 minutes 2.Run for 10 minutes 3.Run for 20 minutes 4.Run 3 miles 5.Run with friends (ended up being 6 mile, tough albeit completed it) 6.Enter my first 10k 7.50:20 10K 8.Break 50 minutes 10k ....and so forth. Now my goals, a year later, are: 1. Break 40 minutes for 10k 2. Break 19 minutes for 5k So you see how I have gone from nothing to pretty respectable, but nothing compared to good runners. I know that progress and improvement comes with practice, dedication, and most importantly time on your feet. Go out for a run with the intention of an alloted time, not distance, and build. Hope this helps. Smile

"I've been following Eddy's improvement over the last two years on this site, and it's been pretty dang solid. Sure the weekly mileage has been up and down, but over the long haul he's getting out the door and has turned himself into quite a runner. He's only now just figuring out his potential. Consistency in running is measured in years, not weeks. And over the last couple of years, Eddy's made great strides" Jeff 14 Jan 2009

        1. Break 40 minutes for 10k 2. Break 19 minutes for 5k
Geez, I'd freak if I ran a 25 minute 5K, not sure what I'd do if it was below 20 Shocked

I'm a pretty new runner, so it's definitely hard to read the posts about 7 min miles. I currently go anywhere from 11-12 min a mile, with a max of 3 miles straight without walking. And like some of you, that's the reason I'm nervous about making my log public. I try to remind myself that you all have been running much longer than me, and in time speed will come, but it's hard to be so patient! But you're not alone, and I'm all for a "Back of the Packers" group! Big grin
He taught me to run high on my toes. I will always remember his words: run proud and remember you are alive.
Hi back of the packers, keep up the good work. My wife started running 10 years ago and couldn't go half a mile, so she alternated walk/run, after a year she entered her first 5k she was ahead of only the ambulance and a 80 year old woman. In 3 years she became a regular award winner. I'm in reverse a former sprinter 400 meters, who learned to run distance. Now I don't like 5k's cause they're so darn short. Surprised 5k times used to be 19 minutes now they're 23+. I used to be in the front of the mid packers, now I'm at the back of the mid packers. Health permitting I'll be in the back pack someday. Big grin Run today so you can run tomorrow. You only have to satisfy yourself, set reasonable goals then go do it. Happy New Year and good running. Smile

Courage ! Do one brave thing today...then run like hell.

              One day at a time

I made the mistake of entering a local one-mile race. I knew I could run that far, lol, but it didn't dawn on me that it's usually FAST people who like that distance! I came in 117th out of 118 people. I beat a six-year-old boy who was literally being dragged by his father. At some point, the dad ran ahead of him, and he came straggling in behind me. To make matters worse, I knew a lot of the people lining the street as I finished! My cheeks were red, equally from embarassment and exertion. My normal pace is 11:45 to 13:00, depending on the distance. My long runs are curently 5 miles. I would love to run a 5k under 30 minutes - maybe in 2008!! Peach, I think it's wonderful that you ran a marathon. I'm trying a half this year, but I can't even visualize a full one yet! When I ran a 10k in August, I was at the very end of the back, close to the motorcycle escort. Teresa
By myself I'm a back of the packer that does 4:30 marathons. But I'm currently training with a group of 6-8 persons for the Breast Cancer Marathon in Jax in February on a 6 hour pace. We run 13-14 minute miles in training. Whether I'm going to run with them at the Marathon or line up with the 4:15 pacers I have not decided yet. But I enjoy running with the six hour group more than running by myself.

Oh god I remember my first 10K, that was actually worse than the marathon...ended with me doubled over nearly puking.

I just finished 13.5 at a 12:39/mile pace, and am quite pleased. Big grin Speed is all relative. I know some would consider me more of a jogger at the speeds I go. But you know what? Last week I ran 10 on snow and ice covered roads, with a high temp of 17, winds 20 mph gusting to 30. I may not have a runner's VO2max, but I have a runner's spirit. Big grin

I was running in downtown DC the other day and at the Jefferson Memorial, there was a family posing for a picture with the husband taking the picture and the wife and kids in the picture. I was feeling nice that day, slowed down, and offered to take the picture. They were grateful, handed me the camera and I took the shot. As I left, they yelled "Enjoy your jog!" Grrrrrrr Surprised

I ran a mile and I liked it, liked it, liked it.

I have heard people whine that they run a 10 minute mile or a 4:30 marathon or whatnot and I laugh....I rarely see anyone on these boreds where I'm at...12/13 minute miles, I could pull off an 11 minute mile maybe by itself but that still kills me.
When I first came to this board a few weeks ago, I was tempted to use as a handle the name I've given myself locally: "lumbering dinosaur." But it was too long. Smile Seriously, my marathon PR is 4:32:56. My Half-Marathon PR is 2:01:45. When I speak to friends and/or co-workers about my running, I always say I enter each race with three goals. They are, in ascending order: • Finish • Not finish last • Place in my age group So far, every race I've entered I have accomplished numbers 1 and 2. I once placed 2nd in my age group in a Half-marathon, but there were only three of us in my division! Big grin Typically, I finish somewhere in the 50-70% bracket. And you know what? That's perfectly fine with me. For more, see my tag line. Also, remember John Bingham's famous quote: "The miracle isn't that I finished, the miracle is that I had the courage to start." Lumbering on...

I'll have days when I don't think I can run a marathon. I'll have a lifetime to know that I did.

Hi Peach! I'm with you at the end of the pack. ANd I commend you for even running a marathon. Thats a goal that I cant even seriously contemplate at the moment, but maybe someday. And I LOVE the quote that RGREEN posted on page 1 about "us" having to run marathons as doubly longer than people who run at a faster pace. Thats what I call ENDURANCE!!! And for the record, I have had many older runners (by older I mean like 60+) whoop my butt in 5Ks and I think its hilarious! I can only hope I will still be doing races at that age.....
