My standings in this game seem similar to many of my race results this year:  I've often been in sight of the (AG) podium, but never quite get there (except for 1 time).

    5k 23:48.45 (3/22); 4M 31:26 (2/22); 5M 38:55 (11/23); 10k 49:24 (10/22);
    10M 1:29:33 (2/24); Half 1:48:32 (10/22); Marathon 4:29:58 (11/23)

    Upcoming races: Greta's Run 5k, 5/19; Scotch Plains 5k, 6/12

I'm glad you're enjoying the rest, but I hope your injury is not serious and heals quickly.

Thanks. It is not very serious, but when I tried to just keep on running on it, it got worse and worse, to a point where I was getting knife shots in the tendon. Ok, now that was not normal "run through it" pain. I got that pain again on one occasion, so I cut some more on the running. Now I think I'm on the mend, and mileage is going to come back up slowly.

What is the stddev% a function of?  I feel like I'm getting too much credit as when I look at my miles vs. goal I see a number more like 24% than the 21% I'm getting in the scores.  I'm just a numbers person who can't help but want to know the math (and deep down, I never fully understood standard deviation, so this vexes me on a whole other level).

It's been 15 years since I had to take a stats class, so I had to look this up.

How do you calculate percentage standard deviation?

It is expressed in percent and is obtained by multiplying the standard deviation by 100 and dividing this product by the average.

Does standard deviation have to be a percentage?

A standard deviation is not a unit of percentage. The standard deviation measures the spread of data, so a standard deviation is in units of whatever the data is in. In a normal distribution, the area between the mean/median (it's the same thing in a symmetric distribution) and +1 standard deviation is about 34.4%.

I know Cyberic has a 3 year average for mileage purposes in this game, so I wonder if that is somehow used to calcuate stddev?

The above in bold suggest that the standard deviation is thus based on some sort of percentage, since it's being expressed as a percentage, right?

I figured it out by remembering something Cyberic said early on - he wanted to reward consistency, which would not be done if people were measured by % of original goal, since you could consistently run 150% of goal, but get a high result.  Instead, it looks like what is measured is each week's % relationship to the YTD average and taking the standard deviation of that percentage.  So if you run 150% of your goal every week, your standard deviation will be very low because you're consistent.  Thanks for the help HCK.

Yes. The standard deviation is a number of miles, and represents (roughly) the average amount your weekly mileage deviates from your average weekly mileage. So a lower number means more consistent. The percentage being reported is that number divided by your average weekly mileage. The percentage is used here as it makes more sense when people have a range of weekly goals. If you run the exact same mileage every week, your standard deviation (and your percentage) is zero, regardless of where you are vs goal.

                        Yup,

Fred is right, for some reason I wanted to reward steady week after week miles compared to ups and downs. Probably to give me an advantage 😁

                        And Dave explained it perfectly.

All the details are in the original post of the thread. I'll refer to that to give the scores. IIRC it's the points + 100 for 1st place stddev%, +90 pts for 2nd place, and so on. But again, I'll check the original thread so I don't change the goal line during the game Smile

Continuing with my math fascination, because of the way StdDev is calculated, using squares of the differences, at this late point in the year, running your average is not necessarily the best way to lower your StdDev.  Depending on the distribution of your runs above/below your average, it may be better to run off your average in order to move that average closer to the center of your distribution of weekly results.  Fun stuff; at least to a numbers geek/nerd (definitions vary) like me.

I'll probably have fun with a few scenarios when the year is over. A few "what if"s.

I could also share the Excel file I suppose, except it's very "draft", like good enough for me, but usually when I share work with others, standards are higher. Hmmm...
