B&B 2021 Miles Game (Read 51 times)

Thanks for doing this. I only realized this year I was part of it so I've only been paying attention to my position recently. I've really no idea how it's calculated and what a good strategy might be to improve my standings. My running this year has been very sporadic and as some of you know I'm probably slowest here so to be in the middle of the standings/pack is pretty cool for me to see.

Thanks again. And I hope to participate more in the chats.

And being fast or slow has nothing to do with it!

            Are we there, yet?

Thanks for the totals and all the work that went into this.  It was fun following the rankings from week to week.

NP George. It was an experiment. Glad you liked it.

I played around with the numbers a bit, and changing the scoring would not really affect the standings as long as I don't change the fact that I compare the miles run to the average of the past 3 years, and more miles equals more points. Since that was the basis of the game (wanted to remove the act of pledging to an amount of miles), the results are as they should.

If I were to keep this mindset in the game, the only thing that I would maybe change is to remove a bum year out of the average, as some of you had suggested (I remember DaveP wanting to remove his lower year out of the equation). But I remember my argument was that I did not want any subjective decisions. So it could maybe be that if a year is more that X% off from the other two, then that year doesn't count. But not sure if it's worth it.

I'm actually very happy to have been middle of the pack. That pretty much means that this year was consistent with my previous 3 years. As Fred has said, maybe this would be a nice "dynasty" game, played over 10 years or something, where off years would be compensated over the next years.

Wow, I am honored—that is the fanciest gold star ever awarded around here!

It was a good year. Other than one recovery week after each of my two marathons, I had no weeks <50 miles. Those two weeks might have cost me the std dev title, but I was certainly glad to be able to race again. My point totals were certainly inflated by the one bad year in 2018, which drops off for next year’s calculation. But starting 2020 I significantly bumped up the level considered as base/maintenance mileage. So I might not have won if 2018 was dropped, but the numbers would have still looked pretty good. Most importantly I’ve managed to avoid any major injuries, which is really the ultimate goal of any of this.

I'm not going to run the game another year. If someone else wants to do it, I could provide the Excel file for 2022 with the required adjustments, but I don't want to do the weekly thing.

I'd be willing to run the spreadsheet if people are willing to copy/paste their weekly mileage here so I can get it all from one place rather than having to visit everyone's log.  There'd also have to be general agreement about what happens when miles aren't posted (i.e. how often or far back will retroactive adjustments be made?).

In the 51 weeks I've done it, there was not a single time I did not get people's miles on time, but of course I was getting them directly from the logs, except for you, Fred.

There's a feature called "report" or "reports" in the group, in which I put in the dates (from last week's Monday to Sunday) and I get everyone's mileage in one place. After that a CTRL-F finds each runner easily. Easier than getting them from multiple posts, actually.

                              Just saying.

Cyber, thanks for doing this all year.  I thought the game was good for a little extra motivation with no added pressure, and unlike the main mileage game it didn't make you feel guilty for running way more miles than planned.

Congrats to DaveP on being crowned overall champ!
