But in order to do that, you have to run some segments faster than goal pace.

I don't know, maybe, 10 feet? 100? The last tenth of a mile? Not at all? If it's a kilometer or more you might be toast, or maybe not. It just depends on one's strengths as a runner.

Unlike the marathon, where you want to run even splits, in the 5k you want to run at even effort. There is a difference, at least in my opinion, and I'm not all that sharp so take it for what it's worth (most likely not much).

The fact of the matter is usually, one of the three miles will be your fastest, and the other two not as much. I've just always tried to keep them tight so there was no significant drop off, as was the case last August when I dropped 40 seconds from mile 1 to 3. In the 5k, that's too much...unless a hill is involved (in my opinion).

In my best races, no more than 15 seconds separated the three miles. But that's how I look at it, not everyone does, and my way may not work for others.

WHEN IS A HILL NOT INVOLVED??

You really want to run at even effort? That doesn't make sense to me - doesn't it feel harder at the end?

In any case, mile 3 is my fastest almost without exception, by varying amounts, I assume because I am sandbagging at the beginning.

When doesn't it feel harder at the end?

I don't know, I'm not sure of another way to do it. If you run for even splits, at some point, you'll probably be exceeding 5k effort. Depending on where on the course that occurs, it may not end well for you. But again, we're not speaking in absolutes, so this stuff varies from runner to runner. All I can say is when I run the first 800 meters too fast, my ass is usually toast. Burnt toast at that.

Oh, and the Martian 5k course is a dream to race on. I love that course!

I run by effort but it's not an even effort. It's more of an effort that I can sustain for the remaining distance.  So the effort is harder near the end but being near the end, I don't have to "hold" it for that long.

But of course, I suck at 5k's. So don't ask me.

+1 to all of the above. I guess the issue is one never know what one can really hold. I assume I may be able to push myself harder, but am just unwilling to because I think I'll blow up.

I don't really feel like I will blow up by going faster. I feel like I will throw up. I get really nauseous during 5ks.

Then it means you're doing it right I guess? But I suppose there are different ways of your body telling you to stop this shit already. Doesn't mean that you can't go faster if you are able to push through it. Will you really throw up? Only one way to find out!

I need to stop being lazy in my running and start doing real tempo runs again. I am faster than my 5k was on Monday, but I can't hold my pace very well. I am just not used to holding a 5k pace for longer than 1 mile now. I have gotten lazy and throw a mile at tempo speed on the end of about 3 runs a week. That is why I have trouble holding pace for more than 1 mile. I am not used to it.
