Are we there, yet?
I just paid $227 to register for NYCM 2016.
I don't pay that much for my 24-hour races, which could be described as 24-hour buffets interrupted by sporadic running and walking.
2024 Races:
03/09 - Livingston Oval Ultra 6-Hour, 22.88 miles
05/11 - D3 50K 05/25 - What the Duck 12-Hour
06/17 - 6 Days in the Dome 12-Hour.
FYP.
Some things are worth that little extra (or lotta extra in some cases lol).
Super B****
Given my track record with the fall racing season... yeah. This may not end well.

Your race - $227/26.2 = $8.66 per mile.
My race - $25/3.1 $8.06 per mile.
Not a big difference.
10.3 at marathon pace. My face froze so badly I could barely order my hot chocolate at the end. I sounded like I was drunk. But it sure tasted good!

Somehow, that doesn't make me feel much better.
My race - $75/50K = $2.41 per mile plus being on trails in the mountains with beautiful scenery.
I don't even want to think about how much I spent to run Boston.
I ran 7 easy tonight.
It seems you're not the only one feeling beat up over this race, as two people have sued NYCM organizers for charging $11 for a chance to enter a lottery to get into the race.
I don't blame them!! It's ridiculous.
I ran 7 easy, and not surprisingly, they were slow miles. Not that I care. Just saying. I was not really in the zone for the first 3-4 miles. I was laboring. But it got better near the end.
