Mmmmm...beer
I have no helpful advice to give, but this thread did make me think of a sticker I saw on the back of car the other day, among a bunch of other running stickers was one that said, "Toenails are for sissies". Definitely got a chuckle out of that one. Lost a toenail after my half in Sept, fun stuff.

how tight is too tight when doing this? I rotate two pairs of shoes and one feels good locked in and the other hurts after a few miles and that pain transfers somewhere else.

I run a loop and do a heel (not ankle) lace lock. I will still have issues if I run more than 15 miles with toenails getting mucked up or if I am on really hilly trail runs I tend to notice it. I don't ever really tie my shoes tightly, I like them a tad looser up at the top. For tris I just use elastic laces.
http://www.drcarman.info/shoelace.pdfThere is a drawing of what I am talking about. You can get more information if you just google "heel lace lock".
Good luck!
Interesting - I lace lock all my shoes and even then sometimes feel like the heel / forefoot isn't narrow enough.
Sometimes I have noticed that back when I did train for marathons, I would have that happen and it was usually just a result of my feet slipping forward and hitting the toe box, particularly because I run a lot of hills where I live (hard to avoid). You might try lace locking the ankles to hold your forefoot in place better if you are sure the sizing is correct. That seemed to help me out.
We have some friends out at Fort Irwin. This guy is the Command Sergeant Major for the base. Anyway, we're talking about doing Tough Mudder this year and discussing running events. He goes on to tell us how he has this other friend that runs ultras all the time. The dude had his toenails removed on purpose...ugh. No thanks.
I tend to "grip" the ground my toes when I walk and run. My podiatrist says it is one reason for black toenails. He could fix it by putting a nick in the tendons in my toes. We both agreed it was ok to just lose a few toenails.
I have more trouble with my Asics Nimbus than the NB 1080 V2's. Something about the toe box. Both are a full size larger than my street shoe size with plenty of room. I've also found that socks can contribute, too.
I got that when I ran in Asics, but realized their toe box was not shaped well for my long second toe. Haven't gotten it in Mizunos or Sauconys.

I have one black toenail from my longest run ever of 13.2 miles. I didn't tie my shoe tight enough.

I am hoping these will solve the problem. I went from an 11 to a 12.
Smaller By The Day
Just an observation. People who have recommended bigger shoes usually still have black toe nails (from previous threads). I just cut my toe nails as short as possible, and I have callouses on the end of my toes, but no black nails. Not saying I'm an expert, but an observation.

Point taken. I just did a 5 mile tempo run and they felt good. My toes had much more room and were not crammed in the front. I don't mind the toenails, I just don't want them to hurt.
I cut mine as short as possible. If hanging I get it off. I still get black ones, probably less often than years past, but I can't remember the last time they hurt.

The more I run, the more toe nail issues I have. It never matters how my shoes fit, and my record for black toes at 1 time is 8. I have webbed toes as it is so dont get any compliments.
Pics or it didn't happen.

Since a couple of my toe nails turned black, I started putting tape over the nail and they seem to be getting better. Sometimes I think I might be unconsciously curling my toes which could also cause some pressure on the nails.
The only folks who get to see pictures of my webbed/black toes are ones who unfortunately leave their phones unattended.
this made me LOL seriously.
I am cracking up.
