A croque monsieur should not be served with fries. Bread and fries together are too heavy, no? A salad is more complementary to the croque monsieur. Of course, if fries are served instead of salad, I'll eat them anyway. And with ketchup on top. None of that mayo crap (unless I'm in Europe, then I just keep my mouth shut and eat my fries with whatever they give me. Don't want to be recognized as the low-class French-Canadian that I am...)

Eh, no.  That's exactly what I ate in Paris several times (well, the Croque Madame).  Bread and fries are a stable (sandwich/burger and fries).  Hello?

True. I forgot about that.  But did you mean a staple instead of a stable? 'Cause I'm all confused now....

Stable might make me question the origin of the meat.

90-minute advanced martial arts class tonight - not really a great way to jump back in for my second class after two months off, when I was only doing the hour-long beginner class before my knee surgery. I sat out about 15 minutes of the class when they were doing things I didn't trust to be OK for my knee, even with the ACL brace on.

And I'm having LRB and Lily's wine tonight - one large glass of reisling to relax.

20,000 miles behind me, the world still to see.
