Snowmageddon Weekend Penguins (Read 26 times)

Penguin Power!

The "Penguin" daily threads were originally conceived to emphasize that all members of the community have a place on the boards. Encouragement, motivation, a little love nip (you will love one, give it a try!) or even a little kick in the pants when needed -- it can happen here. Basically, we celebrate just getting out there and moving our tails! What is "slow"? "Slow" is a perception but one of the common benchmarks is the 10:00/mi pace; but there's no firm line. In fact, there are many of us that have slipped past this, and just hope that no one notices and revokes their "igloo privileges." And some penguins don't run at all, we just hang out for the company! It can be confusing for the forum newbies, but we're not one of the teams in any of the fine games. It's a totally open group, so stop lurking, post an introduction of yourself dive in and join the fun! No application necessary! There might even be a lovely picture for Scotty (we love pics!)

    Upcoming Races: Run as One 4M (4/24) * Japan Run 4M (5/8) * Brooklyn Half (5/21)

    Penguin Power!

I just read on wikipedia that this was actually named "Snowzilla" by the Washington Post, but whatever ;-)

After I brave the storm to walk the dog, I might try to actually do something on the treadmill.  I have kind of a birdseye view from my 37th floor apartment and I see idiots trying to drive their cars out there.  I just can't fathom why people would try to drive in this.  I understand the official vehicles, but normal people shouldn't be driving in this.

I heard it was called Jonas. Apparently, simply calling it a snowstorm has gone the way of the dinosaur.

Agreed.  So far no one on my end of the street has tried to go out this morning, but a few did last night when there was only 3 inches on the ground.  The snowplow came before the snow got serious last night and dropped some gravel and icemelt, but we haven't seen him since.   It's really blowing out there.  Impossible to know how much has fallen so far, because of the drifting, but they are now saying we'll end up with one to two feet.  We're heading out with Ben shortly, and I'm not looking forward to it because the wind is wicked.

That's the Weather Channel.  They keep naming winter storms but the other media outlets no longer follow along.

Well, I hope y'all are staying warm, and safe.   Its no wonder you're coming to AZ for your marathon, Ginny.

Jill, will they even have your race tomorrow?

Hey ya LRB, long time no see!   How have you been doing?

Okay, I don't know any not-mean way of saying this, but today we had the best weather we've had for a while... beautiful, 65* and sunny.  I was able to get in 9 really slow, but pleasant trail miles.   My honey is feeling better.  He took yesterday off again, and had started a steroid treatment which took a lot of swelling from his twisted ankle.  He seems to be feeling a gazillion times better.  He even swears we're going to go out and see friends tonight if I'll do the driving.

Igloo weather indeed in the east!  Hope everyone is safe indoors with lots of heat and good company.

I am doing well, just busy as usual. Smile  Ran 10 outside last night with my new Garmin 325, and so far I really like it.  It's really proud of me for all my "new" accomplishments, like "fastest mile" "fastest 5K" "fastest 10K" and "longest run" haha.

Jim measured 28 inches of snow in the open area in the backyard before dinner, but the drifts in the driveway are deeper.  We shoveled a path out to the street this morning so we could walk Ben and tried to do a first run at clearing the driveway, but it was blowing too hard to be worthwhile.  We also turned around after a block because the street hadn't been plowed (still hasn't) and Ben kept getting ice balls in his paws. He had a blast playing in the snow though.  One of our neighbors with a snow blower cleared a path for the dogs (his and ours) to get out to the back of the yard.  Shoveling was my only exercise today, and may be my only exercise tomorrow if my back doesn't loosen up.  It's definitely good exercise though.

                  Brilliant

                    Stay warm & safe, penguins!

cherie, where are you? It was beautiful in SoCal today, too.  (Hate to rub it in, but...)

Hi!  Hope our penguins are safe and warm!

I ran the Miami HM instead of the marathon as the wind was so fucked up, my lungs were done as of Mile 8.  Still, I got a 5 minute course PR for the HM, so not too bad.  But I feel so slow now trying to breathe is not funny.

                      Barking Mad To Run

Nice run/walk today at Lackland Air Force Base.  Did 4 miles.  Started at 10 a.m.  Weather was sunny, blue skies, and a sweet 48 degrees.  Didn't even need a base layer, just ran in my short-sleeved shirt as there was a nice warm wind blowing too.

Way to overcome to get that PR for the half.

Damaris - sorry your lungs screwed up your race, but congratulations on the course PR.

Scotty - nice cool weekend for you.

Z - what's the difference with the new Garmin?

I did 20 on the TM again.  Not fun.  The sun was shining and the snow looks beautiful, but the roads aren't clear enough to be runnable and the windchill was in the teens so I stayed inside.  Our neighbor with the snowblower helped us clear the driveway, which saved hours of hard work but I'm still feeling yesterday's efforts.

                            Return To Racing

Hi!  Hope our penguins are safe and warm!

Congrats on the course PR.  Take care of the lungs.

7 outside for me.  Never warmed up like they said, so postponed LR to next weekend.

Ginny- Wow!  Well done!  How many weeks do you have to go now?

                                Nice half, D!

I ran my 7.5 on the TM.  Still behind the pace bunny, but caught up a bit from last week.

My new Garmin does a ton of cool stuff.  The biggest one for me is that it does resting heart rate on your wrist, and can help you track recovery so I can hopefully tell if I'm running myself into the ground during a training plan vs. just feeling tired because I'm running a lot.  It also has a V02 Max and race estimator that after only 1 run outside looks pretty accurate!

I was able to pass my old watch along to the person who gave me the TM, because she needed one, so I feel really good about that.
