One of the reasons to hate the 10k, is the effort involved. It has always been said to me that a proper 10k race is damn near 5k pace. ie: it will suck damn near as much for 2x as long. My 'good' but not PR 5k time x2 is right on my PR for a 10k. My PR 5k time x2 is about 1 min faster than my 10k PR. Which means, my pace differential between 5k and 10k *provided* similar performance levels/ weather etc... is around 8-11 seconds. IE: fast enough to suck! nearly as bad for 2x as long...

More than twice as long, really.
I refuse to believe this. The prospect is too daunting.

Yeah, Sly is just screwing with you. It's not two 5k's, it's its own race.
Treat it as such and you will be fine.

I'm going to go back to choosing shoes, then.
Mmmmm...beer
Now onto the really important decision... which shoes do I wear?!
The ones that match your outfit of course, what kind of question is that? lol

My running blog
Goals | sub-18 5k | sub-3 marathon 2:56:46!!
Most of my shoes (at least the ones I'd wear to race in) are red. This doesn't help.
In that case, I'd go with the lightest ones.
My very lightest shoes aren't red... I think the third-lightest are (nobody's ever heard of these, but the adipure Gazelle -- I love them). I'm thinking of those, if I can fit them in my pack so that I don't have to run there in them!
Those are my lightest shoes. They do not match.
Then you need to go get some race flats that match.
Also don't match!
Kinda do match.
Nothing else up for contention unless it's something I can wear to run there AND race in, because these are the only three that MIGHT fit in the pack. (I mean... I'd run there in the T7 racer. I don't actually consider that a racing flat. It's also neon yellow, but we make certain exceptions for the "matching" rule. )
Sorry I'm late on this, because you know how I feel about shoes, and I definitely don't have any comments on that.
It seems to be the consensus that 10k's suck more than other race distances. Not sure I agree; they all have their own various types of suckiness.
21:21 48:02 1:41:51
21:21
48:02
1:41:51
For reference, these were my previous PR's set during a ~5-week period in Spring 2014:
21:33
45:46
1:45:31
(Started 3 weeks after a marathon; the HM time represents still being in recovery mode, and was a large negative split, so could've been faster)
I would shoot for 7:15 / sub-45. The nice thing about short races is if you blow up, so what, you can always do more. Easier said than done I know, it's hard to make yourself take that risk during the race (for some of us).
My main point would be like any race distance, don't expect to get it right the first time. Ultimately I think 7:10 / 44:30 is realistic if you want to take a few cracks at it.

I agree with the 7:08 recommendations. Even on such a horrid day, you are headed to a PR so why not try aggressively?

red is needed for sure. I like the last ones here.
Erm... because the last time I was headed to a PR and tried semi-aggressively I wound up with 48:02?
Cause you were too aggressive for the conditions that day but having run all these hot and humid 5Ks will help you this weekend.
