There are 3 years of history, they just represent low mileage.
Two miles is not really much different than zero, in the scope of this game. Unless that person's true goal or capability was something like 3 miles per week, but I that's not really the case here. Please don't get me wrong, yes we want to support and encourage everyone here, including anyone who did just get off the couch and has a history of zero. It just creates an outlier based on how this game is structured.
Anyway - how did I get 10 points? My goal is 59 and I ran 54. Shouldn't I have 9?
MTA: OK, just plugged it into excel using the formula you indicated, I guess it's the way you're rounding/truncating.

Are we there, yet?
You're within 10% of your goal.

I'm not sure we can. The game was designed to use prior 3 years of running history as baseline. If that does not exist, the numbers just don't really make a lot of sense. But whatevs.
I have been battling injuries for the last four years. The dedication was there but the body wasn't.
My suggestion is to average out my 11 years of running. It gives me a better target too.
Average = 10 MPW

11 might be a bit too much but maybe for next time, we can choose something like a 5 year average for those that have been running as much and 3 for the newer runners.

I am just trying to bump the number up to make it fair. 2 doesn’t do anything for me either. Two runs in a week right now = 20 points.
Don't worry; it will be fine. You win this year, someone else wins next year. It's all good.

It's not about the rounding/truncating. The idea was to have a game where you were getting 10 points for running your average. If my average is 50 over 3 years, it can't mean that I'm always running 50 or more. So if you're roughly running 50 miles week after week you get your 10 points.
I could have made that + or - 2.5, but I also liked.the idea that running 1 single mile in a week was worth a point. So I ended up with that formula, in which the 10 point range of + or - 10% is twice as big as any other point range.

Lots of good discussion here.
Yes, this is the "Beginners and Beyond" forum, so beginners ought not be discouraged.
Yes, it's only a game.
On the other hand, a game has to be fun and hold peoples' interest.
My thoughts:
I don't mind administering the game, but I don't want to be the owner with sole or arbitrary decision making power. How do people feel about:
Above all, I'd like to keep this friendly, fun, and active.

I'm good with whatever decision is made. I'm just glad to be able to participate. But I agree that if the game is going to be yearly (I hope so) that somehow new runners can be brought in. A brand new runner may not have any data so not sure how to accommodate this?
Regardless, maybe this can be a year of tweaking things to see what works and what doesn't.

How about adding a rule of 4 straight weeks of 20 points and their baseline is recomputed to their yearly average.
Dan's suggestion is a good one at 10 mpw, especially when factoring in that his 3 year average included a lot of injury, which I did not know when I posted yesterday. And it's a number he's been achieving for the last 5-6 weeks, so it's not a stretch goal.
Perhaps goals are set in the future based on the 3 year average, but with a minimum number of weekly miles, like it can't be a weekly goal less than 10 for the game. or something. that does seem fair and is still achievable for most people, including beginners who may join later.
This was posted while I was typing. Also a very good suggestion that keeps the game fair throughout the year for all players. I like this.
Now we're adding complexity in administration. Also, you're throwing away the runner's history, which wasn't the original design of the game.
(Thank you for the suggestion. All input is welcome.)
