I know how you feel -- I had a pretty nasty bout of peroneal tendinitis a couple of weeks before the Jerusalem half, and I was a complete wreck. It's easy to say "stay calm until you know that there's a reason to freak out," but it doesn't usually work that way.
Thinking good thoughts for you!!

I've got a $50 copay for chiropractic care, and am limited to one visit covered per calendar year Thanks for the info, it is really extremely helpful to me. At this point I'm halfway between 'injury' and 'taper madness'; I think I'll at least give it a couple days to play out before I start making appointments beyond the first one with the PT.

Start calling around for prices. My insurance does not cover Graston either, but I found a guy (and he's a runner himself) who does it for $35/appointment.
Running is dumb.
That's a great idea. Friends of mine found one in our area for under $50 when their approved chiro visits dropped.
My negotiated rate through my insurance company is only $30 for an appointment (of which I pay $20). So I wouldn't be surprised if you call around and ask for prices, if you can't find something reasonable.
I hurt my left hamstring in January, 2011 and it has never fully healed. Even six weeks off with Achilles tendonosis didn't fix it. It hurts all the time but sometimes worse than others. Hasn't stopped me from running.
Short term goal: 17:59 5K
Mid term goal: 2:54:59 marathon
Long term goal: To say I've been a runner half my life. (I started running at age 45).

You're screwed.
Most likely. You can race with an injured hamstring, but you pay the price in the end.

It will when it degenerates enough.
Perhaps. But in two years, it hasn't gotten worse and has in fact gotten a bit better (or maybe I have just gotten used to it). It's not the first ache I've run through and it probably won't be the last. Hell, I'm 50. I'd be surprised if there wasn't something that hurt.
It's usually pretty safe money to wager that chronic hamstring injuries eventually lead to a couple of seasons' worth of rehab. Just ask Chris Solinsky.
Kristin, Damaris, Julie- Thanks for the congratulations, kind words and good thoughts. I have never been so simultaneously proud and ashamed of the same thing. I always thought of breaking 24:00 as kind of an out-there goal so even though I knew there was an outside chance of it happening, it still feels pretty unreal.
bluerun- Thank you, I know you have dealt with more than your fair share of injury.
I will call around about Graston-- I think my area can be pretty expensive for that kind of thing but maybe I'll be able to find a good deal.
RSX- Thanks for the suggestion for the knee sleeve, I will definitely consider that.
Thanks all for your advice and anecdotes. My hamstring is feeling somewhat better today (very little pain while walking/climbing stairs, though I'm holding off on doing any running) so as of right now I'm inclined to wait until my PT appointment before going forward with other treatments. I don't mind running through a bit of pain, I just don't want to do any permanent/long term damage. It is it is the type of pain that gets progressively worse as it goes on; this is a destination race for me so there are some costs involved. It's not worth it for me to get to the start line if there's a good chance I won't finish.

This was what happened with my groin pain. I ran through it, and finally stopped running 4 months ago now and have been on the IR ever since. Don't be me. PT didn't help at all. All my x-rays and MRIs came back clear. Graston is the only thing that has so far. I think you'll be able to run your marathon (probably with some pain), but just be prepared to possibly pay the consequences. I'm not telling you not to your marathon, especially since it's a destination race; I would probably run it if I were in your shoes. But if you find that you can't heal afterwards, find yourself someone to do Graston.
Mandy- yes, I'm preparing myself for that possibility. I've waited a long time to do this race-- I purposely waited 2 years since my last one, to give myself a chance to get faster, and trained to do one in November but it was canceled. I don't want to do anything overly stupid, but if I have to face some consequences afterward, I am willing.
How r u feeling? Similar issue and Boston in three days... Pulling sensation on all runs even as short as a mile. Please let me know if u went thru with your race?
thank you!
