I never really follow a plan, in this particular case all Tyler races would be my preparation for the Lincroft half. Worked pretty well this year.

Seems like a bit of an understatement - didn't you PR there this year?

I met Mike for track work this morning.  8 x 600m with 400m recoveries.  For some reason, the workout was tough for me today.  When I tire, I tend to shorten my stride, which means I have to increase my cadence to keep up the pace.  Usually, I see my cadence creeping up halfway through a track workout or for the last 1/3 of the workout.  Today, my cadence was higher from the start, showing fatigue in the second of the eight repeats.  Still, sometimes getting it done despite being tired can be of more benefit, especially for mental training.  9 miles for the day.

    5k 23:48.45 (3/22); 4M 31:26 (2/22); 5M 38:55 (11/23); 10k 49:24 (10/22);
    10M 1:29:33 (2/24); Half 1:48:32 (10/22); Marathon 4:29:58 (11/23)

    Upcoming races: Scotch Plains 5k, 6/12; Firecracker 4-miler, 7/4

Fred - Agree 100%.  Getting through a tough workout when you're not "feeling it" is hugely gratifying when it's all over!  Nice workout today and overall mileage.

Vitaly - Nice almost 6 this morning.

I ran just shy of 5 this morning with the middle 3 miles at a brisk pace.  I tried to push up any hills I encountered.

Vitaly, Mike -  I get the frustration of a race that's never the same length; maybe they should advertise it as "approximately 5k" and give up the illusion that they measure it closely.

Fred - so, the second race of the series is really a 5.13M loop, even though officially it's 5.3M.

Someone asked on their facebook page whether the race is 5.3 miles. There were2 answers: 1) - Ish ; 2) just about ...

At least here the overall distance is the same every year, regardless of where they put the starting/finishing mat.

Good job on your morning workout, sometimes one has to push through these!

As for the E. Murray Todd race - yes, I PR-ed there, but for full disclosure the GPS measurement for that race was 13.14M, probably the shortest I've seen for an accurately measured course. Usually it's closer to 13.2M, but I'll still take it: you said the course is accurate, so I'm going with that!

Mike - nice ~5M run with a tempo section!

I ran 5.8M with 4x0.75M at a comfortably fast effort (7:05 target pace). Maybe will do a 10K -specific workout tomorrow, we shall see.

Vitaly - This is why I normalize my 5K results or even just fall back and compare the 3 miles.  Too many races are off in distance.

Mike - makes sense, however keep in mind that even the direction of the course (clockwise or counter clockwise) will make quite a significant difference in GPS pace measurement (I've seen 5-10 seconds per mile variance, and tested it many times in Warminster park), so this is not the most reliable thing either.

I guess we just have to accept it's not perfect and move on Smile

Damaris - enjoy your run + Pilates

Sadly I had to cancel Pilates after 3 new chapter 11s were filed and they were involuntaries (they are exactly what you think they are, the debtor does not know nor consented to these). I ended up working at 4pm and then just hopped on the TM and canceled Pilates so I could run. Did the PT workout and now I'm sore, lol.

I've been feeling less than 100% the past few days - nothing tangible except for a perpetual itchiness in my lower left back and a mild rash has developed there. Consulted DW and the medical section of Wikipedia and it appears I have a mild case of Shingles.

At least it doesn't seem to be affecting my running. 5.5 miles last night and 5.6 tonight as a decent start to my week 1 of the Final. Planning on getting close to 40 miles (200% of goal) this week.

DD has been asking my DW if she will let me run the Zydeco Marathon (or half) in March if I get given an entry for my Christmas present and DW didn't rule it out completely . So, I have lots of questions...

                  1. Will it be worth the inevitable hassle from DW?

                  2. Full or half? Since I last ran Zydeco they have switched the extra section of the full to a second loop of the HM course. I presume DD will be running the half - she completed the Biloxi HM on Sunday in 3:44. If I choose the HM I'm likely to have to wait an hour and a half for her to finish but if I choose the FM she will likely have about an hour to wait for me.

                  3. It is less than 13 weeks away - can I be ready in time?

                  4. Can I train for a marathon solely on a TM?

                  5. It is the day they change the clocks forward and a 7am start 75 miles away. Also peak of tax season. Will I be awake?

                  6. Race details say that the bib has to be picked up in person the day before. I don't like that.

                  7. What will the weather be like? Of the 3 times I ran it before only the first had good running conditions (dry & breezy starting at 50F and dropping to 45F), the second was foggy and 65F at the start rising to sunny and 80F, the third was full sun and 70F rising to 85F.

                  8. If I do run it, what time should I be targeting? I'm thinking 2:05-2:10 for the HM or 4:29:57 for the FM.

                  Started running at age 60.

Mike - Nice job pushing on the hills.  Sometimes, when I'm on an easy run, I find myself pushing more on the smaller hills than on flat ground, without even meaning to.  When's your next winter series race?

Vitaly - Good workout yesterday.  I'll wait to see if you do a 10k workout.

Averaged 6:24 pace, so pretty close to the target, I'll take it.

By the time Zydeco happens in March, it will be over 4 years since I did a race. I ran Zydeco full in 2017, 2018 & 2019 but opted out of 2020, which happened just a few days before the CoVid close down.

2017 was my first FM, decent running conditions and still my PR of 4:32:09. (First half in 2:08:49). 5th of 9 in the M60-64AG

2018 was humid & quite hot. Faded badly to finish in 5:02. (First half in 2:08:28). 4th of 6 in M60-64

2019 was hot & sunny. Struggled to finish in 5:44 (First half in 2:23:46). 2nd of 2 finishers in M60-64 - there is a 6-hour limit. I was the 4th oldest finisher overall, but suspect several others either DNS or DNF due to the conditions.

I think 2023 must have also been a hot/humid race. If I'd run and completed it, I would have been the oldest male finisher (there is a 77yo lady listed, though she actually missed the 6-hr cutoff) and would have only needed to run 5:28 to win the M65-69 AG.

If I was lucky enough to get good running conditions, I think there is a chance of improving my PR - it would need just over 60% AG. At about 61% AG, I would surpass Fred's recent PR.

                            Started running at age 60.

Vitaly - Yes, that's the route I run, although I start at the Fisherman's lot and the second hill.  That hill is long, almost 1 mile, but I find the second hill brutal.  It's called "Ouch" on Strava.  It ends when you make a right into that neighborhood street.  The hill I finish on, which will be our first hill is also tough.  Short, but steep!  It doesn't get any easier at Tyler, does it?  Nice workout this morning.

Fred & Damaris - Enjoy the RDs.

Quick - I had to sneak in asking my DW about the HM in March.  She was on the phone with her sister, so she even said "he thinks I need to be nice".  I asked if I can run a race in March, I could hear her sister say "he runs a race every weekend".  Then I snuck in, it's a half marathon.  She just walked away.  Approval accepted Smile

As Vitaly noted, I ran the 5 mile course we'll be running on Sunday for the Winter Series.  Nothing fast, just making it up the hills!

It is looking possible that I will get to run the Zydeco Marathon. I changed my signature block!

With having increased my mileage for the RA playoffs I've got a pretty good start to marathon training with weeks 1-6 at an average of 36mpw and then a cutback week with a 5K time trial. That means I'm now in week 8 of 20 and looking for 40+ miles this week, all at faster than marathon pace.

Damaris, did you follow any specific plan when marathon training on the TM?

                                6.3 miles tonight. First 8km at 6.2mph (9:42), then 2km at 6.4 (9:23) for a 59:44 10K and then a brief slowdown at the end.
