And, a wee bit of advice needed - I'm assuming the best place to look for digs is near Central Park....? So you can hobble home after. Any advice of good / not wildly expensive accomodation in the area would be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations on getting in. This forum isn't terribly active, so while I hesitate to mention another site and in particular, the dreaded RunnersWorld, they do have an active NYM board and while it's mainly centered on the current NY race calendar at the moment, if you dig through old posts through the summer of last year, you'll find LOTS of threads about hotels and where to stay and pros and cons of staying in different neighborhoods.
