Pam, just make sure you don't get caught up in the trap of zig zagging around everyone early on in the race. That wastes a lot of energy. It sure doesn't hurt to take those first few miles of the race nice and easy anyway. Just go with the flow. You know that already though and have done a great job of pacing in your last couple of marathons. What sort of comments did people have about last years race?
Most of what I read was that the organization of the race wasn't very good (now that they added the half as well). Crowded start.Baggage check problems (looks like you were SOL if you didn't register super early) Looks like they ran out of food at the end (since the half marathoners start at same time). Looks like they are fixing that this year with bagged food for each person. Sparse water stops after the half way mark. The turn around at 20 miles that was basically a 180 around a cone. Not enough volenteers at the end. They even had a major sponser last year (American Express). Sure hope it's different this year! Bob, don't worry about me getting caught in the zig zag trap. I DO NOT zig zag (reason I HATED Broad street run). I'll more than likely find myself a nice spot on the right side and if needed go on sidewalks to avoid the rush of people (did that with Broad Street when I could). I sooooo much prefer smaller races!

Your toughness is made up of equal parts persistence and experience. You don't so much outrun your opponents as outlast and outsmart them, and the toughest opponent of all is the one inside your head." - Joe Henderson

I hate the zig zag - and am guilty of it myself. I didn't realize it wasted a lot of energy though. I'll have to keep this in mind. Like you, Pam, this is part of why I like the smaller races, too. Sounds like it will be a little nutty with the halfers starting at the same time as you. I guess like Bob said, its a good way to start easy. Not that you don't know it. How many total people will be in the race?

When it’s all said and done, will you have said more than you’ve done?

I have no clue how many people will be there. I just know that the Full and I also believe the half are completely filled Shocked When I ran it in 2005, it wasn't full and there wasn't a half marathon. It was crowded then.

Got in my last long run before Philly done! I had planned on doing somewhere between 10-13 miles, but ended up doing 14. If I had been thinking, I wouldn't have stopped at 14. I forgot how fast you can get chilled after a long run, ESPECIALLY when it's cold outside. Within a half mile or so of walking I was starting to freeze. I knew I had at least another mile and a half back to the car so I ended up jogging the 1 and a half miles. My legs had already started stiffening due to the cold , so it didn't feel as good as my run did. Definetly realized that if it's this cold come the 18th, I won't be walking through many water stops. I forget how quickly your body stiffens up in the cold! I haven't been taking any water on my last couple long runs and have taken minimum shot blocks (today I ate two). Now just got to figure out the right clothes. I made the mistake of taking my gloves off for a few miles. My hands started hurting, so I had to stop and to put them on (hard to do when you can't move your fingers lol) Didn't expect to need my gloves the whole way. I was wearing shorts, long sleeve (middle weight) tech shirt with a hat and my gloves. I guess it was colder than I expected. Anyway run felt great. Wow - sounds like it. Just checked marathonguide and they listed 6,119 finishers in last year's full. Shocked

HOLY CRAP, PAM! That is some progressive long run. A quick calculation says that that run was about a 5-6 minute PR for you at the HM!!!! Nice run, girl!

Ditto the holy crap! Is that right? A half marathon PR on a training run that felt great? WOW!!!!!!!! Didn't you post your weight a little while back, and you said you were pretty light? You've lost all your built in insulation! Seriously, keeping warm at the start of the race is crucial. You burn precious calories to stay warm, calories that you're gonna need to use during the marathon! I like to go to the goodwill store before races and buy lots of warm stuff to toss at the beginning. A check of the Philly marathon website said the field limit is 15,000. I guess with all the Chicago marathon dropouts, Philly became their second choice.

No my Half Marathon PR is 1:50:56( My very first half marathon ), HOWEVER if I was running a half marathon today I could of easily beaten that PR. When I got my pr in the HM I don't think I've EVER given a race as much as I did that one! Thanks to my husband I pushed harder than I ever had (except for finishing my first marathon 5 months earlier) Thanks though Mike! It was definetly a nice long progresion.

Not a PR. Yes I'm about 10lbs lighter than I was at Philly in 2005. Thanks for the advice Bob! Well they will definetly get a much cooler marathon Wink

What a difference a couple of years makes! I can't imagine what the NEXT two years will look like if you keep this up. You are a model of consistency and patience Pam. Those two things are key in becoming a successful marathoner.
Thanks Bob!! Got in a nice easy run today. Thanks to dh, I had no problem keeping the pace slower. Guess I really wanted to run the 5k tomorrow Tongue

Had a nice race today. Knew it was hilly, just didn't realize it was a hill that went on and on lol. Actually it could of been much worse. Michelle and I did a 2 mile warm up run, getting back barely in time to get to the starting line. Of course we ended up at the end (really really should of made our way closer to between front and middle of pack. Oh well so we lost some time from that and not being able to run the first .10-.20 of the first mile (too congested) Can't remember exactly what my time was (24:30 or close to that), however due to me being an idiot I didn't start my Garmin until we got to the starting line itself. Not like they had a chip time and a gun time Confused Oh and I totally forgot to turn my garmin off after the race Confused Blush Here is my race. You can see where I abrubtly stopped (finish line ) http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/4403672 1 7:40 1.00 8.9 95 2 8:17 1.00 9.4 96 3 7:23 1.00 10.1 97 4 6:03 0.34 10.3 32 MTA: Got 2nd place in my age group (michelle got first) I think we were the 2rd & 3rd women to come in or 3rd and 4th. Here is the last 5k I did before this one http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/3497368 Which I happened to have ran with Michelle and ALSO got second place in age group (Michelle got 1st)

Nice job, Pam! Way to go getting hardware a week before Philly! MTA - Oh yeah - aren't you supposed to be tapering? Wink
