My advice is to plan your wedding with the groom and decide what you want and how you want your community (that's what your guests at the wedding are) to participate!
I also suggest a reading from Rilke (underlined text has a nice running appropriate metaphor, I think)

Congratulations! This is an exciting time! My advice...work harder on the relationship than u do on planning the wedding. The wedding is one day....marriage is EVERY day after that. I've seen so much angst and $$$$ go into wedding planning.

Hahaha I cannot elope! I am actually very excited to have all my friends and family there, as stressful as the planning can be. Although, we may do a "semi-destination" in Vermont.....sure to eliminate folks who don't really want to be there
