Wild Weekender (Read 18 times)

LB2

It isn't too wild here. I'll run a short run this morning, about an hour. Then, tomorrow morning I'll do a 2.5 to 3 hour run before church.

QOTD: Are you interested in the outcomes of any summer races this year?

I am very interested in WSER this year. I think a new course record could be set. I can hardly wait to watch. However, I don't necessarily crown Walmsley "King of the Mountain" just yet. Anything can happen in a 100 mile race when you have a bunch of talented people running. I am also interested in how people will react if Avery Collins places "high" in the running. I know he is a great runner, but I am not certain this is a course that will ultimately play to his strengths enough to get him in the top 10 with such a talent rich pool of runners. I am also interested in watching how American runners to at UTMB this year.

Traveled to Michigan yesterday. The brats kiddos, drove most of the way. That'll take me several days to recover from the extra stress . Actually slept part of the time so it wasn't too bad.

Got in ten miles today with DS and then DW on the paved rail trail. Seen some turkey and lots of deer and one snapping turtle. Nice day in central MI.  Now I'm trying to fix the brakes on my BILs truck. Not going too well because others have tried and messed things up.

Yesterday QOTD:  Used to volunteer a lot at the kid's school. Used to do more at the Church. Want to do more on the trails but never get the time . REally need to do more than I do.

QOTD: Not really following the race scene much this year. I'll pay attention to Eastern States but only to the others if someone else posts about them.

A nice 13 mi this morning.  It was cooler (68 at start) and my legs were cooperating, not dead. I guess I'm finally coming back from the 12 hour.  Plus I've been keeping up with my core/back stuff so the back is also starting to cooperate.

Now I'm packing for a business trip, headed to London this evening. Looking forward to cooler morning runs.

Good luck to those racing this weekend.

qotd: there's a good summary of the Woman's side of WSER at irunfar, Go Kaci!!! Men's side will be summed up next week I guess.  Looking forward to following.  Also looking forward to Hardrock.

        Are we there, yet?

DNF at mile 11.6 AS at Laurel Highlands 50K. The climbs did me in again, though not as bad as Elkhorn last year. What really killed my chances to make the cutoff were the downhills. I had anticipated making up some time there, but they were so steep, rocky, and muddy compared to what I'm used to that I was almost as slow downhill as uphill.

qotd: I'm watching the NCAA T&Fchampionships now and will follow the Diamond League races and World T&F Championships as well. Have some special interest in the World 24-hour championships in Belfast on July 1st as I've met and know a number of the runners for the US and Canada.

A couple of hot miles in the exposed sun in the heat of the day.  But we were at the park by the pool so I took a dip after.  Felt so good.  I am going to attempt to flip my evening running for morning running starting tomorrow.  We'll see how it goes.

wcrunner - sorry to hear that.  PA downhill can be downright nasty sometimes.

QOTD: I haven't paid attention to anything but now that you mention WSER, I will be tracking that since it's soon.

Have a great rest of the weekend!

            Are we there, yet?

Mr Jamie - As usual at trail races and ultras the volunteers and RD couldn't have been more helpful. When I saw a runner in a Massanuetten shirt but no number behind me. I figured he was the sweep runner. He kept me company and offered encouragement while I struggled up the hills. He texted ahead to the AS and someone from there came back with ice cold water and took over the escort duties while the sweep runner caught up with the new back of the pack. I am getting better, just not good enough yet to handle the long sustained climbs. When we had runable trail I was able to jog and run easy, though too slowly to make the cutoff time by then. I couldn't do that last year. If I can figure out how to change my training to prepare for the climbs, I'd love to come back to redeem myself.

Sorry to hear you had to drop.  Have you tried using trekking poles. I struggle on the downhills because of my bad ankles. Trekking poles really help with stability.

I used to use them for hiking but never for running. I've noticed not all races allow them. I saw only one runner with them today.

Easy 3.4 miles this afternoon, meeting a friend for a trail run tomorrow.

WC, sorry to hear it was not your day at Laurel Highlands 50k.  Technical downhills can be harder than technical uphills, at least for me.

Speaking of WSER, I was in Auburn today picking up aid station supplies for ALT (mile 85.2 aid station).   Walmsley was apparently on fire at the training runs over Memorial Day weekend so people are expecting big things.  Weather has not been too hot and could be conducive to breaking records, although that could change in the next two weeks.  But as LB says, anything can happen.  Very excited about the women's race too.  I saw YiOu, Kaci, and Magda at Lake Sonoma and they were flying!

QOTD: WSER.  I will be at mile 85.2 seeing it all unfold.

I overslept, so my long run turned into a tempo run. I remember when I was in great shape in 2012 and could run a hard, sustained effort for a solid three hours. This morning, I ran a hard, sustained pace for about an hour and a half to get the mileage I wanted done. It felt great. I think I'll do that workout more often.

I saw that women's layout of WSER. I came up with that question from that AJW post.

I am sorry to hear that. I always wanted to do that run, but I always sort of forget about it until it is too late to sign up.

4.8 miles trail miles yesterday. Mywatch had 1070 feet of elevation gain,  not sure if it was that much but it was pretty hilly.

Tough break on your race George!

QOTD  I don't follow anything in particular, but most of the major races I'll get updates on Facebook.

I posted yesterday, but don't see it. We've been having some connection issues with our cable provider, so must not have loaded.

Yesterday ran on road for some easy miles.  Today DW and I ran 10 in the woods. She wanted a less technical run, so we didn't do the AT section that I had planned for today. I'll do the AT run on Tuesday.

George - sorry about your DNF.  Agree with the poles. I find them a great help on downhill running.  At the Grand Canyon 2 years ago, I used the poles more for running downhill than for pushing up.  They really softened the blow to the legs and made me feel more stable. Might be worth a try.

QOTD:  What I type yesterday - I'll be following the World 24hr Championships in Belfast in 3 weeks. I know a few of the participants in the top 12 (6 women, 6 men).  Also running will be Bob Hearn and Laurie Dymond as they represent the US in the +50 AG.  Both get to compete for the Wold AG title.  I'll be watching the Western States too, hoping Jim stays on course this year.

                              “Paralysis-to-50k” training plan is underway!

Got to London, took a nap, then did a 10 mi run. All the restaurants near my hotel are closed and the nearby pub's kitchen is closed. I don't feel like walking over to area where stuff is open, so chips and an IPA is for dinner tonight.  (I do have yogurts and apples in the hotel if I get hungry later.)

wc, sorry to hear about the dnf, those technical downhills can be rough!!!
