Vibram Five Fingers KSO (retired)

Equipment Info
Activity: Run
Shoe size: 11.00 (US/Canada)
Total distance: 26 mi
Purchase date: 6/1/2009
Price: $80.00
Notes: I think they are size 42 according to the Vibram chart. Excellent for drills and short mileage. Lightweight and conducive to fast running. They would require too much of a transition timeline than I can allow in my training at present, so I have no interest in doing much more than cross training in them. They make my feet and legs sore after a few miles of forefoot running, so I would need to run in them maybe twice a week and gradually up the mileage. Even still, I'm very paranoid about running on anything other than grass. I found that they cause chafing more easily than normal shoes. I could put toe socks on, but having to buy toe socks to wear them seems like I'm moving back towards just wearing shoes, so I don't really want to have to make that purchase just for the sake of doing more than a handful of miles in the Vibrams.

My review:

I find these shoes to be great for strengthening leg muscle. They provide excellent cross training, as they allow me to work on my stride in different ways. They are very light weight, which is conducive to running fast in grass. My legs definitely felt sore after all of the forefoot running I do in them, so I can only stand so much. I'd like to up my mileage on them, but I'm too worried about upping my mileage in general to be doing much experimentation on new running styles while putting that added stress on my legs. I hope to continue doing them on light easy runs or days when I have drills, but have no current plan to do actual runs of any length on them, nor do I intend to run on anything other than grass with them.
