Notes

My goal was to run at a pace between 6:00-6:05, so to run the whole thing about 12:00-12:10. I would ideally do three of them, but going into the workout I was content to only try one or two of them. I didn't have much confidence that I'd be comfortable going that fast.

DR tends to start out fast, which always forces my body to come to immediate terms with the reality of the workout. So we ran our first 200 in about 40 seconds (DR a second or so faster). Neither of us pushed the pace, though, and we fell into a more comfortable pace.

I was pretty surprised to be holding up well. I had 5 hours of sleep the previous night and ate a bag of Cheetos while playing online games. I had zero intention of doing a hard workout that day. When I saw DR's forum post, I thought maybe I should at least make an effort to be ready, so I was able to hydrate and loosen up a bit before work let out. I didn't bring shoes preferable for pavement, though, so I just did it on the infield.

Back to the first interval at hand (or foot), I was able to run it without much stress. I noticed my heart felt a tinge of pain in the 8th lap.

We rested a bit and started the second interval. I again felt surprisingly okay and my heart felt a slight ache during the 7th lap. I pondered that it would hit me on the 6th lap in the next interval.

During the final interval, I derived that doing a 9th lap would make my workout almost exactly 6 miles. I resolved to try and do that so long as I could avoid bad oxygen debt. I also resolved, though, not to roll over and be a wuss on the first 8 laps just because I planned to do a 9th. I was ahead of DR going into the 6th lap and I wasn't keen on letting him easily beat a kickless me at the 3200 line, so I didn't let up any from the 6th through 9th lap.

The uneven way DR and I ran was kind of nice, because it meant we could each focus on doing our workouts and not really worry about how our results compared. It likely made it easier for him to not push the final interval and made it easier for me to run over 12:00 per interval rather than try to keep up with his 11:xx each time.

If the Forerunner is to be believed, then I ran 6.02 miles in 36:23.
