Notes

Boston 2011

Cory's Training Theory: Run as often as possible on empty. Take water only for hydration. Force my body to use fat as fuel and improve aerobic function.

Cory's Marathoning Theory: Eat at least 3 hours before the race. Drink water before race and for the first portion of the race. Force my body to chose fat as the primary fuel source saving glycogen for the end. Switch to whatever sports drink is being served during the early part of the race. NOTE: This isn't working.

I put the notes above because 2 out of the last 3 marathons my stomach has completely revolted at whatever point into the race I started drinking sugary sports drinks. The Gatorade at Boston was full strength. My stomach couldn't handle it. Temps were warm. By the 8th mile I was noticing cramps. By the 10th I couldn't drink anything. I managed to get my stomach back under control to some degree once I started walking around 20. I drank almost nothing from mile 8 through 20. It felt like I was running at a 3:10 pace AND doing sit-ups from miles 10-18.

Boston is great. Horrible airline service out and back (sleeping in the Chicago airport on the way home) sucked. Running poorly was aggravating. I've definitely lost some perspective. It will sink in. I will be back. I'm not exactly sure when. But I can't half-ass this, not Boston.
