Notes

Outside of the lack of course markings and organization, the race was pretty cool. Outside of the first mile mark that seemed accurate, the course was a mess. We followed the course map through 9 miles before we got off base, which means we were flying with the 7 mile split being correct. My mapping of from the 9 mile mark to where we actually finished was 3.4 so I'll assume it was about 3/4 of a mile short. That would still be a big pr and right about what shape I thought I was in if the race went well. I led for the first 2 miles, ran with the Kenyan for the 3rd mile and then he took off. He gapped me pretty hard but I felt by halfway over the Golden Gate Bridge the first time I started inching back towards him. I took a spill shortly thereafter but got up and kept cruising. I was down 45 to 50 seconds at the 7 mile and kept slowly gaining. Couldn't see the leader from the time we got off the bridge so was just following cones and people's directions the last 5 miles or so. Kept having people say I could catch him ahead and could see his white jersey ahead of me in the distance so figured somehow we were going the right way (which obviously wasn't the case) Anyways got a little over a half mile away climbing the last hill and saw the Kenyan dude jogging towards me with the bike next to him clearly confused. He saw me, turned around, and started sprinting. I gave it all I had left and felt great coming down hill the last 400 but didn't have enough. No objective feedback unless someone ran the course with a Garmin but best estimations are 12.4 (20k which is about what I thought). Big pr but can't keep it because I have no proof. Enjoyed the scenery at least and good to see all my friends out that way. Not sure if I'll go back to that or not again, least professional race I've ever run.
