Mile race at alumni. Unfortunately, this meet was much smaller than it has been in the past and not many alumni were going to be up front in the mile so I figured I should be the one to take the lead. I talked to Steve about it ahead of time and talked to a couple of the current runners to tell them I would take it out.

I got out well and went through the first 209 in just under 34 and the 409 in 66. The next 400 felt solid in 67 and I tried to push a little bit in the 3rd quarter because I knew that is a weak point. Unfortunately I think trying to push just tightened up my legs and I didn't even pick it up. I actually slowed to a 69 for the 3rd quarter. The two Luther guys went around me shortly after 3 to go. I felt fine sticking with them and was hoping I could still kick the last lap. But when Ian took off I didn't really make a move. I tried to pick it up but apparently I just ran another 33.

I finished with a sub 4:30 which was my goal but I was hoping to be closer to a 4:25. I am 32 though and led over half of the race while knowing that isn't the best way for me to run a fast time anymore though. And if I just could have gotten my legs going for the last lap and cut off 2-3 seconds on that lap it turns into a very successful 4:26-4:27 opener.

Overall I'm still happy with the race but I think I can definitely run faster. Unfortunately, I think the next mile I race will be at Luther again and I'm afraid I may have to lead to get a fast race as well. Either way it was still a solid opener and continues a streak of years running sub 4:30.

Nice work keeping your streak alive! I'm bummed that my sub-5:20 streak of ~10 years was broken due to the order of events, but I'll just put an asterisk on the 5:26 I did run, knowing it was less than an hour after a PR 3k. Anyway, I wish I could join the fun back at Luther next weekend to try my hand at a speedier mile. Best of luck to you!
